UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY L. MOTTER, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nb. 414,986, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed July 11'; 1889. $erial No. 317,115. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. 'lVIOTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan View of my improved toy or puzzle, and Fig. 2 a transverse sectional view taken on the line 0000 of Fig. 1.
The object of the invention is to furnish an interesting and amusing puzzle or toy, which may be cheaply manufactured, as will presently appear.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction, which will be fully hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the drawings annexed, the letter A designates a disk. provided with a smooth upper surface and mounte d upon a central pivotal cone B,the apex of the cone resting in a suitable recessin the bottom of the disk, whereby the said disk may be readily rotated and os- Upon the face of the disk is erected and suitably secured an outer octagonal inclosure a, Within which is formed a main rectangular inclosure b, a space or alley-way 0 being left between the two inclosures. The inclosure b communicates with the alley-way c at its corners and at about the middle of each of its four sides by means of openings d, as shown. The inclosure b is divided or partitioned off into a number of small squares, (preferably thirty-six,) which communicate with each other by openings similar to the openings d, above described. The four center squares are painted or otherwise distinguished from each other with different colors. Placed loosely in the alley-way c are four balls 2, colored to correspond with the colors of the four central squares.
The object is to so manipulate the disk that the balls will be placed and kept upon their respective central squaresthe black ball upon the black square, the blue ball upon the blue square, and so onthe openings or gateways between the inclosures enabling this to be done.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plate or disk provided upon its face with an octagonal inclosure a and an inner rectangular inclosure I), this inner rectangular inclosure having side and corner openings (1 and being partitioned off into smaller intercommunicating rectangles, as shown and described, in combination with a suitable number of balls 6 and a suitable pivotal support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY L. MOTTER. Witnesses:
