Description

Patented Apr. 9, 1895.
Inventor. 75. Wm /m Attorney.
J. C. ORMSBY. BLOCK PUZZLE.
(No Model UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH ORMSBE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONF- HALF TO HENRY HESS, OF SAME PLACE.
BLOCK-PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,168, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed October 30,1894. Serial No. 527,417. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Q. ORM'sBY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Block-Puzzles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to what are commonly my invention :Figure 1 is a plan view of my block puzzle; Fig. 2, a plan view of the box with the blocks removed; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the blocks, at such angle as to show two of the sides. tion on the line 12 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 3- 1 of Fig. 2.
The box or receptacle A has a flat base A with four vertical sides A and is open at the top. The height of the sides is about equal to that of the blocks hereinafter mentioned. The interior of the base, or floor of the box, is provided with points or pins a, a, at fixed relative-distances apart, so as to come in the center of each block. The blocks are shown in cross section in Fig. 4, from which it will be observed that the number of blocks employed will be sufficient to fill the box entirely with the exception of one space which is of 'a size corresponding to that of one block. The blocks are square, preferably with their corners I) cut off for ornamental purposes and to reduce friction in movingthem about. Each of the six sides of each of the square blocks is recessed as at 01. See Fig. 3. All of these recesses, with the exception of one are colored of different colors, so that each block will have five colored recesses, each block being similar in that respect, like sides of each be- Fig. 4 is a sec:
ing colored similarly. The remaining uncolored recess in each block is lettered as shown in Fig. 1, in proper alphabetical order or they may be numbered, in proper numerical order.
It will be observed that the blocks will rest by their recesses upon the pins or points a in the box and will be closely contiguous to each other as shown in Figs.) and 4t. 7
The blocks in normal position being in proper alphabetical or numerical order as shown in Fig. 1, the object to be attained is as follows: The blocks are turned over until all the sides of a single color are shown, for illustration until there are turned up five blocks all with their red side up. The game to be played with the puzzle is then to turn the blocks back so as to get their lettered or numbered sides up and inproper alphabetical or numerical order. I
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A game or puzzle consisting of a shallow box or receptacle'having points or pins on the interior of its base or floor, at fixed relative distances from each other and a series of lettered or numbered rectangular blocks centrally recessed on each side and of such size relatively to the distances between the pins that when the block is tipped over, its recess will register with the adjacent pin and be temporarily held in position thereon, substantially as described.
2. A game or puzzle comprising an open shallow box A having points or pins (1, a, at fixed relative distances, secured to the interior base thereof; and a series of rectangular blocks centrally recessed on each side and of such size relatively to the distances between the fixed pins that when a block is tipped over one of its recesses will register with the adjacent pin and be temporarily held in position thereon, the blocks being lettered or numbered upon one side and colored upon the other sides in varying colors corresponding in the several blocks; su bstantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature this 17th day of October, A. D. 1894. Y
JOSEPH O. ORMSBY.
