SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent N0. 558,066, dated. April 14, 1896. Application filed August 20, 1895. Serial No. 559,887. (No model.)

\ a resident of Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specica-- tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to puzzles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class, the solution of which is difficult, but may be accomplished by the exercise of care and skill in the manipulation of the device.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which* Figure lis a central longitudinal section of my improved puzzle; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3, a similar section on the line 3 3.

In the practice of my invention I employ a tubular casing A, provided with a bottom B and the removable cap or cover O. Below the cap or cover C is a transverse partition D, above Which is placed a vertical partition E, and the transverse partition D is provided with a hole or aperture d. On the side opposite to the hole or aperture d, in the partition D and above the partition F, is a vertical partition Gr, in the upper portion of which is formed a hole or aperture g. Below the partition F is a partial partition H, at the end of which is a vertical partition 7L, which connects with a partial partition K, which is similar in form to the partition H, and by means of the partitions H, h, and K a chamber 7c is formed in one side of the tubular casing A and near the middle thereof.

The partition His provided with two holes or openings h and h2, the former of which is arranged adjacent to the side of the casing A, and on the upper side of said partition His placed two diagonal partitions L, which converge to the hole or aperture h', and extend diagonally across or partially across the par-4 tition H and upwardly to the partition F and inclose the hole or aperture h2.

Below the partition K is another transverse partition M, and above the partition M are two vertical partitions mand m2, by means of which two chambers or receptacles N and O are formed, and formed in the vertical partition m are two holes or openings P and P, the first of which forms a communication with a chamber N and the second with the chamber O, as shown in Fig. 3, and the partitions m' and m2 are also best shown in this figure, and within the partition M or that part thereof which constitutes the bottom of the chamber or receptacle N is a hole or opening m.

Below the partition M is another partition R, in which is formed a hole or aperture fr, (shown in dott-ed lines in Fig. 3,) and upon the upper part of said partition R is placed strips or plates r and r2, said strips or plates being shown in full lines in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and in the bottom B is a port or opening o, which is also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

The solution of the puzzle consists in so manipulating the device as to pass the ball or spherical body S, which is placed in the top thereof, through the holes or apertures d, g,

f, h', h2, P, m, and fr and out at the port or opening b in the bottom B, said ball or body being passed through said holes or apertures in the order named, and this solution, though exceedingly diiicult, may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and patience in thev manipulation of the casing.

The casing A may be composed of glass, if desired, and the transverse and the vertical partitions may also be composed of glass or other desired material; but my invention is not limited to the material employed nor to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes and alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters lPatentl. A tubular casing provided with a series of transverse and vertical partitions, said transverse and vertical partitions being provided with holes or apertures whereby chambers or receptacles are formed, substantially as shown and described.

2. A tubular casing provided with a series IOO ical body or balhwhich is adapted to be placed above the upper partition, and to be passed through the holes or openings in the transverse and vertical partitions, and out at the port or opening in the tubular casing, substantially as shown and described.
