KNIFE.
No. 414,973. Patented Nov. 12, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSS J. CHRISTY, .OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,973, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed June 22, 1888. Serial No. 27?,90'7. (No model.)
T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that- I, RUSS J. CHRISTY, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
. This invention relates to knives, more especially the kind used for kitchen and household purposes, but in part applicable to other knives having fixed handles.
The invention consists in a particular construction of blade and handle and the combination thereof.
The object of the invention is to produce a cheap and serviceable knife of the kind stated.
Figure 1 is a side view of the knife blade and handle detached. Fig. 2 is a similar view with handle attached. Fig. 3 is amodification showing blade attached and riveted. Fig. 4 is a similar View with handle removed from blade; Fig. 5, side view, and Fig. (3 end section, of part of wire handle.
The reference-letter a indicates a knifeblade. This blade may be made of any usual form, but without a tang.v
The blade a is preferably notched in the back with a dovetail notch b and in the end by a similar notch Z). The blade may also have" rivet-holes c and c" in proximity to the notches, and on occasion the notches may be dispensed with. I
A wire (1 of any usual form in cross-section is bent to the form of the desired handle. By preference the two ends of the wire are slotted a little way. that it enters the notch I) in the blade, and the end e of'the wire enters notch b of the blade. The wire or metallic rod may have anyJ suitable form in cross-section. If the wire be slotted at the ends, as shown at ff, Figs. 5 and 6, the slotted ends will embrace the blade alittle beyond the bottom of the dovetail grooves 11 1). Holes h h in the blade in proximity to the dovetail notches, or in place of-them, come under the ends of the notched or split wire when applied.
lVhen the wire handle is adjusted to the blade, it is easily compressed in such manner The end eis bent to such shape as to cover the edges of the notches b b and expand over the edges thereof, thus easily forming a good fastening. If the wire be notched, the notched portion covers the rivetholes, and at the same time the ends of the wire are compressed, (by hammering or by a press,) the metal of the wire is caused to flow into these holes, thus making of the wire handle itself a rivet to hold it in place. Of
course a separate rivet may be applied, as in Fig. 3; but this is not generally necessary.
The wire handle may extend along the back of the blade as far as desirable, (see Fig. 3,) thus not only bracing the blade at a considerable distance from its end, but forming a back against which the hand or finger may rest in using.
For a bread-knife and some similar purposes the blade may have a serrated edge, as shown in Fig. 4. This blade will not be like a saw-blade, because saw-teeth usually have set, and the edges are as thick as the sawplate, while the knife-edge is made sharp at the bottom as well as at the top of the serrations.
The wire handle may be ofany quality known to the trade. The entire blade and handle can be plated, and any ornamentation adopted.
The blades, being entirely tangless, can be readily formed without waste of metal and easily ground in the manufacture.
What I claim is- 1. A knife having a bent-wire handle, one
end of the handle being attached to the end of the blade and the other end attached to the back of the blade some distance from the end, substantially as described.
2. A knife-blade having a portion cut away at one end and a portion cut away at the back, and a bent-wire handle having the ends secured to the blade and extending into the cut-away portions thereof, all in combination, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' RUSS J. CHRISTY.
