SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,688, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed June 26, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs BLAIR DU NHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVenona, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Disinfecting and Deodorizing Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in disinfecting and deodorizing devices; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing it in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the agitator.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a dry closet of the usual or any preferred construction. Within the said dry closet I suspend by means of a ring B,engaging over a pin or hook C, a ,cylinder or can D, as shown, having a discharge-spout E, leading from its lower end to a point under the seat of the closet. The cylinder D is preferably constructed of sheet metal; but it may be constructed of any other materiahand may be of any desired size. The cylinder is provided with a tapered bot-tom F, so as to direct the contents to the discharging-spout E, and within the cylinder I arrange a vertical rotary shaft G, which terminates a short distance above the lower end of the cylinder, and is provided with a rotary screen II and the stirring-fingers I, by means of which the contents of the cylinder or can are keptloose above the bottom of the same. The shaft G is journaled in the removable top J of the can, and is carried by the same.
The discharge-pipe is provided with a pair of horizontally-sliding valves or cut-offs K L, which are connected by alever M within the pipe. The lever is fulcrunied between the valves upon a bracket N, projecting from the discharge-pipe, and it is provided at its upper end with a knob or button 0 for convenience in operating the device. The upper end of the lever is normally forced away from the discharge-pipe by a spring P, secured to the pipe and bearing on the lever. The upper valve is thus held withdrawn from the pipe and the lower valve projected into .the same, as will be readily understood. The

lower valve L is further provided with perforations Q, so that air may be admitted to the. interior of the pipe and dry-slake the lumps of lime contained therein.
In practice the cylinder or can is filled with lime, fullers earth, dry earth, or other deodorizing and disinfecting agent, and then suspended in the dry closet,in the inanner'shown and above described. WVhen a deposit has been made, the upper end of the lever M is pressed inward, thereby driving the upper valve inward and drawing the lower valve outward. As the upper valve is drawn inward the flow of the material will be arrested, while when the lower valve is withdrawn the material supported thereby will be allowed to fall and escape from the discharge-pipe onto the deposit. By this arrangement I insure the discharge of a stated quantity of material, and thus prevent wasting of the same. Upon releasing the pressure on the lever the spring at once returns it to its normal position, throwing the upper valve out and the lower valve in, so that another charge can fall upon the lower valve, as will be readily understood. The vertical rotary shaft is turned occasionally, so as to stir and break up the contents of the can and prevent the same clogging around the entrance to the discharge-pipe. The discharge-pipe may be provided at its lower end with a screen,if so desired, to scatter the material as it is discharged.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very cheap, simple, and efiicient device, by the use of which I am enabled to destroy the disagreeable and unhealthy odors and gases arising from the deposits in dry closets, housesinks, and garbage-piles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
