To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY F. SCHUMANN, citizen of the United States, residing at Los Gates, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in flushingcuspidors, and has for its principal object to providea means by I the same under pressure. 1

A further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the flushing of the cuspidor may be controlled at the will of the user.

lVith these and otherobjects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a cuspidor constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a cuspidor constructed in accord ance with this invention having the outwardly flared base 2 which is provided with the slot 3, through which the lever of the operating mechanism is adapted to extend.

The main body. portion 1 is preferably formed of the cylindrical wall 4 having its upper edge intumed as at 5, the free edge of which is turned downwardly and inwardly as at 6 to form the passage 7, the use of which will be more fully hereinafter described.

Secured to the wall 4 at the point where the curved portion joinsjthe wall, is pro vided the inwardly extending flange S which projects toward the free edge of the wall 6 and terminates in the funnel-shaped member 9, the reduced end of which terminates in the cylindrical extension .10 which is an ranged to be connected to the sewerage system. y

through which the cylindrical extension 10 p of the funnel-shaped member is adapted to extend. This bottom 11 is also provided near its edge with the inlet opening 13 with which the supply pipe 14 communicates. Diametrically opposite the. inlet opening is provided the outlet opening 15, the walls of which form the'valve seat 16. A suitable pipe 17 arranged to communicate with the outlet opening and an angular extensionlS is formed at the opposite end of the pipe and projects upwardly through the chamber 19 and communicates with the passage7 illustrated in Fig. 2.

A suitable valve 20 is arranged to seat on the vale seat 16 and close the opening whereby the flow of liquid through the pipe 17 may be controlled. Connected to the valve 20 is the rod 21 which extends through the stuffing box 22 and is provided at its lower extremity with the pivotal connection 26 by means of which the operating lever 27 is held in operative relation with the rod 21.

Surrounding the rod 21 between the stufling box 22 and the pivotal connection 26 is provided the expansion coil spring 28 which is.

The lever 27 is provided with the slot 29 which is arranged to receive the pin30 car-i ried by the depending bracket 31 which is secured in any suitable manner to the pipe 17. The end of the lever 27 opposite the pivotal connection 26 is extended asshown in Fig.

2 and terminates in the enlargement 32 which is arranged to form a foot pedal by means of which the operation of the valve may be controlled.

It will be apparent that in use the pipe 1 1 is connected to a water main in any suitable manner and the pipe 10 connected to the sewerage system.

Upon turning on the water it will be appareat that the same will flow: through the pipe from the foregoing.

Pressure is then applied to the portion 32 of the lever 27 p which will cause said lever to rock onits pivotal connection and force the rod 21 up wardly thereby raising the valve 20 from the seatv 16 and permitting the liquid contained within the chamber 19 to fiow through the pipe 17 and angular extension 18 into the passage7, from which it passes into the funnel-shaped portion of the cuspidor and out through the drain pipe 10, thus removingthe contents of the cuspidor without further manipulation.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as Will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A device of the character described co1n prising a cylindrical outer casing, an inturned portion at the upper edge of the casing, a downwardly and inwardly extending flange formed at the free edge of the inturned portion, a flange within the cylindrical body portion and projecting inwardly, funnel-shaped member formed at the free edge of the flange, the reduced end of the funnel-shaped member terminating in a drain pipe, a bottom Within the cylindrical casing, the bottom, cylindrical casing, and funnel shaped member forming a chamber, an inlet pipe, an outlet pipe connected to the bottom and communicating with the chamber, and means to control the flow of liquid through the cuspidor.
