CIGARETTE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patents No. 414538, date& November 5, 1889.
Application filed September 5, 1889. Serial No. SZB OIS. (Ne model.) i
To all whom zt may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. HOEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riclr mend, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in CigaretteBoxes, of which the following is a specification. v
This improvement relates to a class of pasteboard boxes which exist under various ro forms made froni a single piece of material properly shaped and folded.
The object of the improvement is to prodnce a box suitable for cigarettes, and dispensing with the use of the tray sliding within a separate case, which, notwithstanding the increased cost of manufacture both in labor and material, is still employed in the best cigarette-boXes in the market.
My improved box is made of a single thickzo ness of material, with the bottom, sides, ends, and the rea-r third, or thereabout, of the top permanently united, while the forward part of the top, being hinged to the permanent rear part, forms a lifting lid, and, is provided 2 5 with a fiap or tab adapted to slip'within the front end of the box and between this and the ends of the cigarettes therein contained, sufiicient friction being thereby provided to keep the lid closed.
In order that any invention may be fully understood, Iwill proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a plan View of the blank from 5 which the box is forned, showing in dotted lines the creases on which it is to be folded. Fig. II is a perspective View of the box open. Fig. III is a vertical central longitudinal section of the box. 4
Referring to Fig. I, 1 represents the portion of the blank forning the bottom of the box; 2 2, the portions forning` the sides; 3 and 3, respectively, the fixed and noving portions of the top, the latter constituting 5 the lid; i, the tab or fiap connected to the "lid; 5 the' rear end of the box; G, the front end; 7 7 andS 8, end flaps, the latter being curved to correspond with the contour of the front G; and 9 a side piece connected With 50' the top 3 and pasted within or on the outside of the side 2 in forming the box. This done the rear end fiaps '7 are turned in, the rear end piece 5 turned up and connected to the end flaps 7, the front end fiaps 8 S turned in, and the front 6 turned up and pasted to the inturned fiaps 8. This coinpletes the box. The top is creased on the line 3 between'the fixed portion 3 and the free portion 3, to facilitate the movement of the latter, which thus forms a lifting lid carrying a tab or fiap 4, which slips within the front end of the box and is held by friction between this and the ends of the cigarettes C contained therein.
The front end of the box forned of the upturned portion (j and the inturned flaps S, is scalloped, as shown at 10 in Fig. II, to a sufficient depth to expose a portion of the front ends of the cigarettes when the lid is raised to pernit of their inspection, and also to facilitate their renoval for use, while a sufticient width of the front is left entire to aiiord friction between this and the ends of the cigarettes to keep the lid closed.
As a modification, I may forni the front ends of the fiaps 8 of sufficient length to overlap, as indioated by dotted iines in Fig. II, and leave between theni and the front G a slit or pocket 11, to receive the extremity of the flap or tab 4:, to nore seenrely hold the lid closed.
Having thus described ny invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A blank for cigarette-boxes, constructed substantially as hei-ein described and shown, consisting of the bottom portion l, having back portion and scalloped front portion 6, the side portions 2 i, having rear end flaps 7 '7, separated froni the back portion, and front end fiaps S 8, separated fron the front portion, the additional side portion 9, and the top portion 3, having a lid 3, and fornied with a flap 4.
2. A. cigarette box constructed, as heroin described, with the bottom sides, front, back, and the rear portion of the top pernanently united, the front portion of the top hinged to the back portion of the top, forining a lifting lid, and having,` at its forward end a tab,
IOO
which slips between the fixed front of the a tab or fla-p 4, slipping within the sealloped box and the onds of the cigarettos contained front, &11 as heroin described.
therein. I
3. The oonbination of the permanently- ERNEST A. HOEN. 5 united bottom 1, sides 2 2,back 5, top 3, and VVitnesses:
soalloped front (i, and the lid 3 hinged at its A. T. ABERNETHY,
back to the fixed top 3 and having at its front JOHN PFAFF.
