UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCEe SYLVESTER GROGG, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,404, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed March 9, 1889. Serial No. 302,641. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that LSYLVESTEE Gnoee, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.` Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful lmprovem ents in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to desks adapted to be secured in an upright position to the wall of a room in such a manner as to occupy but little space, and to be easily accessible; and the invention consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View showing the folding leaf of my iinproved desk open and in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View showing the folding leaf closed. Fig. 3 is a side view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A designates the back of my improved desk. B B are the sides, C the top, and D the bottom, all of which combine to form a suitable casing, within which partitions E are arranged to form any desired number of suitable side compartments, in one or more of which drawersFmay be placed. The sides B B are provided near their lower ends with shoulders G G, forming rests or supports for the folding leaf H when the latter is opened, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The said folding leaf, which forms the front part or cover of the desk, is hinged to the sides B B by means of L-shaped strap-hinges I l, which are suitably attached to its sides, and through the projecting arms J of which the inge pins or pintles l K extend through the sides B of the desk. The free ends of the hinged arms J 'are provided with counterweights L, which, when the leaf or cover is closed, serve to retain it in position and to prevent it from dropping down accidentally. A lock is also provided, as shown at M, by means of which the free end of the cover may be attached to the top C of the desk-frame.
The inner sides of the side pieces B may be provided below the bottom D of the deskfraine with supporting-cleats fora drawer N, or the said drawer maybe arranged upon the ledge or flange between the said side pieces, as shown in the drawings.
In addition to the rest or support for the folding leaf afforded by the shoulders Gr Gof the side pieces of the frame, the said leaf is connected with the side pieces by means of chains O, which serve to support it when opened for use, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. l.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection withthe drawings hereto annexed. The construction is simple and inexpensive, the desk occupies but trifling room, and it is always conveniently accessible for writing purposes by simply lowering the folding leaf. The latter, when raised, is balanced by the counter-weights upon the hinge-arms, which serve to close and retain it in a closed position.
Having thus described my invention, l claimy l. ln a-wall-desk composed of the back, the sides having shoulders formed near their lower ends, the top, and the bottom, the combination, with the frame thus constructed, of the folding front leaf or cover having L- shaped strap-hinges attached to its sides, the pivotal pins or pintles passing through the projecting arms or brackets of said hinges and through the sides of the desk-frame, and the counter-weights secured at the free ends of said hinge arms or brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the desk-frame composed of a back, the side pieces having shoulders near their lower ends, and the top and bottom pieces, of the drawer arranged between the side pieces below the bottom, the foldingfront leaf connected to the sides of the desk-frame by L-shaped strap-hinges, the arms of which have counter-weights at their free ends, and the chains connecting the sides of the folding leaf with the sides of the deskframe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
