Elma/14 501 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW D. CASSIDY, 0F OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-BENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW D. GAssIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Piano-Benches, of which the following is a-specification.
This invention relates to improvements in piano benches.
The improvements in question consist in constructing the seat or top of the bench in two sections adapted to open from the center of the bench outwardly and in providing the leaves or sections of the seat with music holding attachments and means for holding the music in place when the sections of the seat are lowered."
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the device with the two sections of the seat raised. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view with the seat sections closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modification, showing a part of the bench frame and one of the sections of the seat with its associated parts. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of Fig. 4 with the seat section closed, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the hinged guard which holds the music sheets in place when the seat is closed.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the piano bench comprises a box like frame or casing 1 of rectangular form mounted on the supporting legs 2 and a cover or seat consisting of the two sections 3 hinged at their outer ends, as at 4, to the ends of the casing l and adapted to swing outwardly from the center of the bench.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the seat sections are shown closed. Said sections are provided on their inner faces with the rectangular frames 5 in which the sheets of music are placed and braces 6 are arranged 5 between the frames 5 and the casing 1 to hold the seat sections open. When the seat,
'sections are closed they form a seat for the player, the frames 5 fitting in the casing,
and thus being out of view.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusively, a gate or guard 7 is shown for holding the music sheets in place when Specification of Letters Patent.

frame and provided at their junction with the extensions 9 with the weights' 12. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the weights and-extensions 11 always hang in a vertical position, as a result of which the guards or gates are closed when the seat sections are lowered and hold the sheets. of music in place and open when the sections are raised to provide for the removal of the music sheets. By making the lid or seat in two sections adapted to open outwardly from the center, either one of the sections may be opened, while sitting on the other section to obtain a certain sheet of music.
Having described my invention what I claim as new is:
In a piano bench of the class described, a lid or seat made in two corresponding sections adapted to open outwardly from the center of the bench, music frames attached to the bottom faces of the respective lid or seat sections and a guard for each music frame for holding the music sheets in place when the seat sections are closed, said guard comprising a cross bar extending across the width of the music frame and adapted to assume a vertical position in front of and in spaced relation with the outer end of the frame when the seat section carrying the latter is closed, and adapted to swing ,down into a position parallel with the bottom of the frame when the lid or seat section is raised, said bar provided at its ends with inwardly and right angular bent extensions bent in turn to form vertical extensions pivoted to opposite side walls of the frame, and weights at the junction of said extensions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW D. CASSIDY.
