Be it known that 1, IsoM P. HAWoRTI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foldable Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an ironing board which is adapted to be folded into a cabinet.

It is the object of this invention to provide an ironing board which can be swung in and out of a wall recess or cabinet, and to provide means whereby the board may be sup ported at different levels.

Another object is to provide means for counterweighting or balancing the board whereby the disposing of the board in either its open or folded position is facilitated.

Another object is to provide a combined ironing board and cabinet in which the ironing board can be folded into a compact space when not in use, and the cabinet utilized for the reception of the ironing appurtenances.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the ironing board in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the cabinet showing the ironing board in its folded position. Fig. 3 is a detail section and elevation illustrating the ironing board as positioned on its higher level. Fig. 1 is a similar view I showing the ironing board as disposed on its lower level.

More specifically, 5 indicates a cabinet formed with L-shaped side panels 6 and 7 connected together by a top panel 8 at their upper ends and by spaced

9 and 10 on the rear edges thereof. The front of the cabinet 5 is formed with a casing 11 on the upper portion thereof which is fitted with an outwardly swinging door 12.

9 and 10 to reciprocate vertically therebetween is a panel 141 to the lower edge of which an ironing board 15 is hinged to swing outwardly by means of hinges 16; this panel 11 being counterweighted by means of ordinary sash weights 17 and 18 connected to

19 and 20 pass ing over pulleys 21 and 22 mounted in the side panels 6 and 7. The

19 and 20 connect with the side edges of the panel 11 and the weights thereon are incased in housings 23 mounted on the outer faces of the side panels 6 and 7. The Weights 17 and 18 are of such character as to not quite balance the panel 1 .1 and the ironing board 15 so that when the ironing board 15 is in its vertical position against the inner face of the panel 9 as shown in Fig. 2 the panel 11 will be in its lowermost position and supported upon the upper edge of the panel 10; the upper edge of the panel. 10 forming an abutment to limit the downward movement of the panel 14:.

The lower edges of the casing 11 on the opposite sides of the door 12 terminate on a plane with the lower edge of the latter. Hingedly connected to the upper outer edges of the lowermost portion of the L-shaped side panels 6 and 7 by means of a hinge 24 is a panel 25 having inwardly extending

26 and 27 thereon which are adapted to abut against'the outer faces of the side panels 6 and 7 when the panel 25 is in its vertical position. Mounted on the upper end of the panel 25 and extending beyond the

side panels

26 and 27 is a shelf 28 which is adapted to extend beneath the lower ends of the casing 11 and the door 12 when the panel 25 is in its uppermost position as shown in Fig. 2.

Hinged at 29 to the outer face of the panel 25 adjacent the upper end thereof is a panel 30 having supporting legs 31 formed thereon adapted to seat on the floor to form a support for the panel 25 to maintain the latter in an approximately horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1. Pivotally mounted at 32 on the rear face of the panel 25 is a U-shaped frame 33, the connecting portion 31 of which is adapted to be arranged beneath the ironing board 15 to form a support for the latter when in its open and operative position.

The member 31 is formed with sockets 35 to receive pins 36 carried on a filler block 37 adapted to support the ironing board 15 and maintain it in its uppermost level, and which when removed from the member 31 is designed to be disposed on the upper edge of the panel 14: which is fitted with sockets 38 to receive the pins 36 on the block 37 the block 37 then forming an extension of the panel 11 to abut against the lower edge of the panel 9 and limit the upward movement of the inner end of the ironing board 15.

In the operation of the invention, assume the parts to be disposed in the position shown in Fig. 2 with the ironing board folded in a vertical position against the panel 9 and with the panel 14: supported on the panel 10. To dispose the ironing board 15 in its operative position the panel 25 is rocked outwardly thus causing the panel 30 with the supporting legs 31 thereon to gravi- 5 tate to the vertical position shown in Fig. 1.

The door12 is then opened, whereupon the U-shaped member33 is turned on its hinge V 32 into the vertical position shown inFig. 1. The ironing board 15 is then rocked outwardly on its hinges 16 and when its weight is supported on the filler block 37 carried on the member the weights 17 and 18 will "operate to elevate .the panel 1% and :the inner end of the ironing board until the upper '15 edge of the panella abuts against the lower edge of the panel 9 which forms a stop to limit the upward movement of the panel 1 1. -The ironing board 15 will then be supported in a horizontal position on its uppermost 20 level as particularly shown in Fig. 8. lVhen it is desired to lower the ironing board 15 the filler block 37 is transposed from the 1nem-- "ber 3+1- to the upper edge of the panel 14 as particularly shown in Fig. 4; the

filler block 37 then acting to dispose the inner end of the ironing board 15 on a lower outer end of the ironing board being dis- "posed on a corresponding plane by reason of being supported on the'member 34. The

lower portion of the cabinet is provided with a shelf 39 and is fitted witha hinged closure 10 beneath'the hinged panel 25 to give access "to theinterior ofthe cabinet at this point, thus forming a space for the reception of the implements and appurtenances employed 40 in normally disposed in its lowermost position, counterweights connected tosaid panel, an ironing board hinged to said panel to swing downwardly to a horizontal position, a stop for limiting the upward movement of the panel, and means engageable with the ironing board remote from the stop cooperating with said stop, whereby the board may be maintained in a horizontal position.

2. A folding ironing board, comprising cabinet, a vertically reciprocal panel therein, a counterweight attached to said panel, a stop for limiting the upward movement of the panel, an ironing board hinged to said panel to swing in and out of the cabinet, a hinged panel on said cabinet beneath the ironing board, .and means on said panel adapted to engage the ironing board when said panel is in its horizontal position engageable with the ironing board cooperating with the stop to support the ironing board in its horizontal position.

A folding ironing board, comprising a cabinet,a vertically reciprocal panel therein, a counterweight attached to said panel, a stop for limiting the upward movement of the panel, an ironing board hinged to said panel to swing in and out of the cabinet, a hinged panel on said cabinet beneath the ironing board, means for supporting said hinged panel in a horizontal position, a member on said panel adapted to engage the ironing board and cooperate with the stop to support the ironing'board in a horizontal position, and a filler block adapted to be interchangeably mounted on said member and said reciprocal panel, whereby the ironing board may be adjusted at different levels.
