SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,510, dated October 22, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that We, JOHN AUTRY HEARD and Gnoacn SOLOMON MITCHELL, citizens of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Union and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table, Desk, or Store-Gounter Seats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to that class of seats or stools used at store-counters for the convenience of customers, which are hinged or pivoted to the counter, so that they may be swung in either direction.

.The invention consists in certain details of construction whereby the stool is made stronger and is better supported, and in a peculiar d cvice by which the stool can be held in different positions relatively to the counter, all of these features being fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A represents a store-counter of ordinary construction.

B represents a stool or seat of any suitable construction, pivoted centrally by means of a pin 1) upon a framework formed by the ring a and the arms I) c, said arms being pref-- erably formed in one piece and running at right angles to one another to support the ring to which they are riveted or otherwise secured. The arm 1) extends inward to the counter, and is there pivoted'by means of a staple d, as shown, or in some other suitable manner. The stool thus supported is braced by an oblique arm 6, secured to or formed with the arm 1? near the stool, and extending thence to the counter, near the base of which it is also pivoted either by a staple, as before described, or, as preferred, and shown in the drawings, to a standard f, secured to thecounter, and having a pin g, which enters a hole h in the arm. As thus constructed the stool may be revolved upon its own pivot b, and

may also be swun-gfrom side to side either to suit the convenience of the customer or to 5o put the stool out of the way under the ordinary projecting ledge of the counter. In order, however, to give additional strength as well as to provide means for holding the stool in diiferent positions relatively to the counter, we havedevised the supporting-bracket O. This is of curved or bow shape and has its ends firmly secured to the counter on each side of the pivot of the arm b. It thus projects out under said arm, and, supporting it, takes a great part of the strain which would otherwise come entirely upon the pivots. Radial notches or depressions 41 are formed in its upper side, into which the arm I) fits. The stool can be thus placed in diiferent positions relatively to the counter, and,with the weight of a person upon it, will be securely held. It is, however, easily moved by simply easing it of a part of the Weight and sliding it around,which the curved shape of the notches readily permits.

It will be readily understood that our seat is adapted to other locations than store-counters-such as tables, desks, and the like-with- I out material change in construction.

Having described our invention,we claim- 1. The combination, with a support, such as a store-counter, of the pivoted arms e b, a seat supported thereby, and an independent supporting-brace G, secured to said support and extending below the arm b as a guide and support for said arm, substantially as set forth. A
