Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2st, 1917.
Application filed November 9. 1916 Serial No. 130,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. DUBBEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Serving- Trays for Lunch-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be" a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has'reference to serving trays and more particularly to that type of tray used in quick lunch restaurants where the patrons serve themselves from counters, and carry the food selected to a chair where it is eaten while sitting.
The special object of the invention is to provide a tray of sanitary design which can be supplied at the food counter and when filled, carried to a chair of standard design on the right arm of which there is pivotally mounted a bracket adapted to support said tray. The tray being placed upon said b acket, it can then be'moved to a convenient position when the patron has been seated. Then the arm is not being used it can be swung in under the arm of the chair.
'Another object of the invention is to generally improve upon devices of this character by providing a device which will be of extremely simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
\Vith these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of the application, and in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lunch chair of standard design with a device con structed in accordance with the present invention applied thereto, the bracket which is pivotally mounted to the arm of the chair being shown swung into one of its extended positions and having a serving tray supported thereon;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the right arm of the chair showing the position which the bracket would take when used by a person seated in the chair and eating from the tray,
and in dotted lines the innermost and outermost positions of the bracket; 5
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale taken 011 the plane of the line of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a chair of standard design, used more par ticularly in quick lunch restaurants and the like. The chair 1 is here shown as being provided with front and rear upright members 2 and 3 respectively having an arm l arranged horizontally between the same. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the arm 4 rests directly upon the upper end of the upright member 2 and is considerably wider than said upright member to allow for the positioning thereunder of the bracket to be hereinafter described.
Secured to the lower side of the arm 4L at the front end thereof by suitable securing elements is a plate 5', and projecting downvardly from the latter is a pivot stud 6, the free end of which is threaded to' receive a clamping nut 7. As clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the stud 6 extends through an aperture 8 arranged in one end of a hori- Zontal bracket-9, thereby pivotally mounting said bracket to said arm l.
The other end of the bracket 9 is provided with a supporting member 10 which comprises a circular supporting plate 11 provided with an upstanding trunnion 12 and a plurality of arms 13 extending radially therefrom. Arranged in the upper side of the plate 11 and surrounding said trunnion 12 is an annular recess 14, the purpose of which will be presently explained.
The reference numeral 15 represents a serving tray which may be of standard shape, is constructed of sheet metal, and provided with rounded corners for obvious sanitary reasons. The tray 15 is provided with a centrally arranged opening 16 in which is fitted or secured in any suitable manner as by brazing, the upwardly extending central portion 17 of a bearing plate 18. The bearing plate 18 is provided on its lower side with an annular flange or ridge 19, the purpose of which will be here inafter described.
As hereinbefore stated, the invention is particularly designed for use in quick lunch restaurants where the patrons serve themselves from counters, and in this connection,
a number of trays are to be stacked one upon the other on the counter. As the food is selected it can be placed upon the trays which are then carried to the chair and placed upon the supporting member 10, the flange 19 fitting into the annular recess 14:, I
length than the arm l and the supporting member 10 is substantially equal in width to the width of the arm; so that when said bracket carrying the supporting member 10 is swungto its innermost position it will lie completely under said arm, as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings. I
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and use of the invention will be readily understood without'a more extended explanation.
As various minor changes in form, proportion and in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit ofthis invention, 1 do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown one or its ends, said member comprising-a circular supporting plate provided with an upstanding trunnion and a plurality of arms extending radially therefrom, and having an annular recess on its upper side surrounding said trunnion; of a trayresting upon said supportmg member and having an opening therein, a bearing platehaving an upwardly projecting central portion QXL tending through and fitted into the opening in said tray, said bearing plate resting upon the aforementloned circular plate and being further provided with an annular flange r on its lower side, said flange being seated front and'rear upright members and an arm arranged horizontally between the same, a stud projecting downwardly from the lower side of said arm at the frontend thereof, a horizontal bracket pivoted at one end to said stud to swing horizontally, and provided at its other end with a tray supporting memher, said bracket being of less length than said arm and said member being substantially equal in width to the width of the same whereby said bracket carrying said member, when in its innermost position, will lie completely under said arm, and a tray detachably and revolubly mounted on said member when said bracket is swung from under said arm.
3 In a device of the character described,
circular supporting plate provided with an upstanding trunnion and a plurality of arms extending radially therefrom; of a tray resting upon the arms of said supporting member and having an opening therein, a bearing plate resting upon said supporting plate and having an upwardly projecting hollowed central portion extending through and fitted into the opening in said tray, and receiving said trunnion therein, whereby to revolubly and removably mount said tray upon said bracket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing i witnesses.
ANDREW r. DUBBEN.
