SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,405, dated October 22, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADOLF MANDEL, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Iniprovernent in Button-Sewing Needles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to that class of needles employed to attach buttons to shoes, and has for its object to so construct the shank of the needle that the cord adapted to serve as the thread may be expeditiously and firmly secured thereto and an essentially smooth longitudinal surface be maintained from the shank to the point.

The. invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying or shank end, and the groove is graduated in depth from the inner to the outer end,whereby the outer end of the needle-shank is comparatively thin, and a longitudinal slot 14 is produced in the bottom of the groove, and the members 15 thus formed are forced apart slightly, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and bent upon themselves in the direction of the point of the needle to form a hook-like extremity A to the then pressed downward to a secure frictional contact with the body of the cord, longitudi-' ADOLF MANDEL.
