Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY P. CARPENTER, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
Specification formin g part of Letters Patent No. 137, 824, dated April 15, 1873; application filed February 8,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Miss MARY P. CARPEN- TIER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button,of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of my improved button. Fig.2 is a detail view of the eye, the button-head being detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved button, which shall be so constructed that the eye may be detached from the head, passed through the clothor leather, and again secured to the head, rendering sewing unnecessary. The invention consists in a button-eye made of a piece of wire bent into proper form, and having its ends flattened and. pointed, and a screw-thread out upon them above the taper; and in an improved button formed by the combination of a head having a screwhole formed in it, with the open shanked eye, constructed as hereinafter fully described. V
A represents the button-head, and B represents the eye. The eye B is made of a piece of wire of the proper length, and bent into the proper form. The end parts of the wire that form the shank of the button-eye are flattened upon their contiguous sides so as to be round, or nearly round, when brought together. The ends of the wire are sharpened, so that they can be readily passed through the substance to which the buttons are to be attached. -Upon the end parts of the wire, above the pointed parts or taper, is cut a screw-thread, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the eye may be screwed into a screwhole in the button-head A. The head A may be made of any suitable material, and of any desired form or style.
In using the button, the head A is detached, the ends of the wire forming the eye B are then sprung apart, as shown in Fig. 2, and passed through the cloth as shown in Fig. 1, after which the head A may be again screwed upon the eye B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.,A button-eye made of a piece of wire bent into proper form, and having itsends flattened upon their inner side and pointed, and a screw-thread out upon them above the taper, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. An improved button, formed by the combination of a head, A, having a screw-hole formed in it with the open-shanked eye 13, constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
MARY P. CARPENTER.
