Why
UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN L. DELANY, OF TYLER, TEXAS.
DETACHABLE AND ADJUSTABLE ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,789, dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed July 20, 1889.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Joan L. DELANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyler, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable and Adjustable Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to adjustable and detachable rollers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for use in warehouses and stores for readily transporting large and heavy boxes, &c.-in other words, to handle such articles as are inconvenient to be handled on trucks commonly used for such purposes.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved roller 3 Fig. 2, a top plan view of same, shown in its adjusted position in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a side view of same; Fig. 4, a top plan view of a modified form of my improved roller; Fig. 5, a side elevation of same.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, 1 and 2 indicate rollers or casters, of any preferred construction, rigidly secured to the under side of the bed or body 3 of my improved roller.
For preventing the object when placed in position upon the bed or body of my improved roller from slipping, and also to hold the roller in position, I provide the bed on its upper face with spurs 4:.
In order that my improved roller may be readily adapted for boxes of different sizes, I make the bed or body portion in two paral- Serial No. 318,162. (No model.)
lel sections 5 and 6, hinged together on their top and bottom by the loosely-pivoted braces 7 and 8, placed at an angle on said sections with reference to the outer edges of the same, and by this arrangement the sections 5 and 6 will have a combined longitudinal and lateral motion relatively to each other, as will be readily understood.
In case the object to be transported should not be large enough to engage the spurs 4 on the upper face of the bed or body portion,
and to prevent the sagging of said bed, I provide each section on its meeting end with an angularly-placed opening 9, designed to receive the angularly-placed dowel 10 on the ends of said sections, as shown.
In the modification I have shown the sections of the bed portion with cross-heads or ends 11 11.
Having fully described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character described, the combination, with the sections 5 and 6, arranged parallel to each other and adapted to have a combined longitudinal and lateral motion with reference to each other, as described, rollers located upon the under side of said sections, and the spurs on the upper faces at each end, of the braces 7 and 8, located, respectively, upon the lower and upper faces of the device and diagonally across the same, and pivoted at each end to said sections 5 and (3, the openings 9 provided on said sections, and the dowels 10 on said sections opposite to the openings 9, and adapted to enter the same when the sections are closed, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. DELANY.
