S. E. BARRETT.
BIER.
Pa. 1;e1:1tedl July 7, 1885.
By /zalr Afforne J NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
SAMUEL EDWIN BARRETT, OF WESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
BIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,781, dated July 7 1885.
Application tiled May 23, 1F85. (No moth-l.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, S. E. BARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Biers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
iWIy invention -relates to biers for supporting cofflns, the object being to provide means for iirmly and securely holding the coffin in place thereon, which shall be cheap and simplein their construction, strong and durable, and which will be thoroughly effective and efficient in use.
Tit-h these ends in View the invention consists in the improved construction and conibinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bier constructed in accordance with my invention and showing a coffin supported thereon, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken cent-rail y through the bier and coffin.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, A represents the bier, which is composed of the side rails, B, extended at their ends to form handles C. The said side rails, B, are connected by a series of cross-bars, D, which are preferably mortiscd to the said side rails.
Upon the innersides of the side rails,at the ends thereof, are pivoted supporti ng-legs E, which, when lowered, are adapted to bear against the end crossbars of the series D, and thus support the hier.
Upon the under sides of the side rails, near the ends thereof, are journaled in recesses a., series of rollers b, by means of which the device may be readily moved.
Upon the upper side of one of the end crossbars of the series D is provided a recess or mortise,in which is secured a plate, c, having a threaded opening. also made in the said cross-har, and in said opening is located a set-screw, e. Upon said end cross-bar is located ,on the outer side thereof, a plate, f, which projects upwardly, and is adapted to serve as a stop for the foot of the coffin when in place upon the bier. Upon one ot' the other cross-bars of the series D are formed recesses g. Upon the upper and under sides of said cross-bar and in said recesses are located plates h, having threaded openings, and working in the threaded openings of the plates, and in the cross-bar to which they are secured, is a set-screw, i.
In operation, the coffin is placed upon the bier with the foot bearing against the stopplate, and the set-screws are turned to engage openings in the under side of the cofn, and thus hold the same in place.
The device before described is simple in its construction, strong and durable, and may be manufactured at a comparatively slight cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A supporting-bier for coffins, comprising side rails connected by cross-bars, a stop-plate projecting upwardly from the end cross-bar, threaded openings in two or more of the crossbars, and set-screws working in the saine, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL EDWIN BARRETT.
