STOVE-LEG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,901, dated December 20, 1904.

Application filed May 2,1904. Serial No. 206,081.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AOOB J EWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Legs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object the placing of stoves or ranges when desired upon wheels or casters, so that the stoves or ranges may be moved anywhere about the house or premises and when located where desired to be settled in position, as will be fully described in this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my invention with the base removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of my invention, the foot of the leg being in section and the base removed. Fig. 4: is an enlarged top plan view of the base.

My invention is described as follows:

The numeral 1 represents the stove-leg, 2 the foot, and 3 the base. The foot of the stove is provided with a recess 4 running up from its bottom. Secured horizontally in said recess 4 is a perforated plate 5, and secured in the perforation of said perforated plate 5 are spring-fingers 6, the upper ends of said springfingers being secured at their upper elbow ends to a bearing-plate 7 by means of bolts and nuts or screws 8. Between the lower ends of said spring-fingers 6 is grasped a ball 9, and working on the upper part of said ball and against the lower face of the plate 7 are small bearing-balls 10. Adapted to fit neatly against the foot 2 of the leg is a hollow base 3, having in the center of its top a depression 11 to receive the lower part of the ball 9, but

not deep enough to allow said ball to come to the ground or floor. The said base is provided at each corner with a vertical perforation 12, so that screws may pass up through said perforations 12 into each corner of the foot, as indicated by the dotted lines 13 on Fig. 1. The purpose of the screws is to hold the said base steadily in place. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the bottom of said base fits squarely on the floor or ground, so that no materials or sweepings can get under it. Thus the mechanism shown in Fig. 3 cannot become clogged.

When I Wish to move the stove or range from one place-to another, I take a poker or something of the kind and raise the legs up one at a time and remove the bases. Then the stove is on casters or balls and may be moved around easily from place to place; but when in position the lower part of the base sits squarely on the floor, and the stove or range is therefore firmly in position.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A stove-leg 1, having in its foot a vertical recess i; a perforated plate 5, secured in the upper part of said recess; spring-fingers 6, se-

cured in the recess of said plate 5; bearingplate 7, secured in the upper elbow ends of said spring-fingers; ball 9, working between the lower ends of said spring-fingers; bearing-balls 10, working between said ball 9, and said bearing-plate 7; hollow base 3, having in its center a depression 11, and in each corner a vertical perforation 12, said base adapted to be secured to the lower end of the foot 2, by screws, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
