Description

(No Model.)
0. C. MITCHELL.
TRANSOM LIFTER.
' No. 411,465. Patented Sept. 24. 1889 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES CALVIN MITCHELL, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,465, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed May 11, 1889. Serial No. 310,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs CALVIN MITCH- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, inthe county of WVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Ventilators for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to ventilators for cars, and has particular reference to the means employed for operating a series of ventilators.
Among the objects in view is to connect a series of ventilatonshutters by means of a rod suitably journaled in the sides of the car; to provide the rod with suitable devices located within easy reach, whereby it may be partially rotated, and thereby closing or opening the shutters as desired, and to accomplish the same in a cheap and simple manner, all as will be hereinafter described.
The invention consists in certain features of construction, hereinafter appearing, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of one of the interior walls of a car provided with ventilators and mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention for operating the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective in detail of one end of the operating-shaft and the operating-bars. Fig. 3 is an interior view, in perspective, of the case or cover in which the operating-bars are located.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the side or roof portion of a car in which are located ventilating-openings 2, provided with transverse shafts or pintles 3, upon which are mounted for oscillation shutters 4., said shutters being located within the opening 2. At intervals throughout the side of the car and located intermediate the openings 2 are secured outwardly-projecting brackets 5, terminating in bearings 6.
Mounted in the bearings 6 and opposite the series of shutters 4 is a shaft 7, provided at intervals occurring opposite each shutter with cranked portions 8, which are loosely connected to, in this instance, the upper edge of their respective shutters by means of links 9. The end of the shaft 7 is squared, and is pro vided with a small gear 10, which is inclosed by a case 11, at the opposite vertical sides of which are formed ways 12, in which are located operating-bars 13, the inner faces of which are provided with teeth or racks 14, designed to mesh with the gear 10 at each side thereof. At the opposite end of the car is located an ordinary supporting-bracket 15, in which the end of the shaft adjacent thereto terminates.
The operation of my invention is at once apparent, in that it is simply necessary for the purpose of closing the shutters or ventilators to draw down upon the rack-bar 13, which is provided at its lower end with a handlink or other character of pull 16, which rotates the gear 10 and the shaft 7, and through the medium of the cranked portions 8 and the connecting-links 9 the shutters are closed either wholly or partially, in accordance with the distance to which the rack-bar 13 is drawn down. By drawing the opposite rackbar 13 down by a similar means the shaft 7 is partially rotated in an opposite direction and the shutters a consequently opened either partially or wholly. In this manner it is evident that Ihave provided at a minimum cost a simple method of operating simultaneously all the shutters at one side of the car and maintaining the same either entirely open or closed or partially so, as desired.
I do not limit myself to the exact manner herein shown and described of mounting the shaft '7 or operating the same, or to the form of easing inclosing the rack-bars and cog 10, as I may vary the same in regard to these details without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a car having a series of ventilating-openings provided with pivoted shutters, of a longitudinal shaft provided with cranks occurring opposite the shutters and loosely connected therewith, a cog mounted on the crank, and a rackbar mounted in ways and meshing with the cog, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a car provided with a series of ventilator-openings and with pivoted shutters mounted therein, and intermediate bearings, of a shaft mounted in the bearings and provided with cranked portions In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 10 occurring opposite the shutters, links conown I have hereto affixed my signature in necting the shutters and cranked portions, a presence of two witnesses.
gear mounted on the end of the shaft and in- V closed by a casing which is provided With CHARLES CALVIN MITCHELL. Ways, and opposite rack-bars mounted in each side of the casing and meshing with the gear Witnesses:
and adapted to operate the same in diiferent ARTHUR BROWN,
directions, substantially as specified. T FRED. A. HOWLETT.
