Description

J R. RITTER. SLIDING DOOR OPERATOR.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 16,1515- 1 .2 1 0, 1 03 Patented Dec. 26, 1916.
JOSEPH R. BITTER, 01? HASTINGS, FLORIDA.
SLIDING-DOOR OPERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916.
Application filed July 16, 1915. Serial No. 40,308.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. BITTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of St. John, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door Operatoi's; and 'Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in sliding doors and particularly to opening and closing means therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide means for opening and closing a. sliding door such as used on freight cars, barns, warehouses, and the like, which will be effective in its operation and easy to manufacture.
Other objects and advantageswill be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. 7
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application of the device to an overhung barn door, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 4& of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 20 represents a barn wall having the doorway 21. Over this doorway is mounted a track 22. A door 23 is disposed for movement over the doorway and carries on its upper edge the hangers 24.- which are provided with the grooved rollers 25 engaging on the track 22. The shaft of one of the rollers extends outwardly beyond the face Gopies'oi' this patent may be obtained 1'01 five cents each, by addressing the of the door, as shown at 26, where it is provided with a sprocket wheel 27. Mounted on the door and below this sprocket wheel are brackets 28 in which is mounted a shaft 29 having a crank handle 80 on its outer end. On this shaft 29 is mounted a sprocket wheel 31 and engaged around this sprocket wheel and the, sprocket wheel 27 is a chain 32. By rotating the crank handle 30, motion will be transmitted to the shaft 26 so that the door will be propelled along the track into either opened or closed position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this device is extremely simple in construction and that it is extremely easy to operate, as it is only necessary to rotate the crank handle 30 to cause the door to slide into either open or closed position.
What is claimed is:
A sliding door operator, comprising the combination of a track-way, a sliding door, brackets on said door, rollers operative on said traclcway, and provided with shafts journaled in said brackets, a bracket mounted on the face of said door, a pinion having an elongated shaft journaled in the last mentioned bracket, said elongated shaft being downturned to provide a crank, and a pinion carried by one of said roller shafts and geared to the first mentioned pinion.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH R. BITTER.
