BACK-BAND HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,806, dated September 10, 1889.

Be it known that I, DAVID D. N OLLEY, of Wilson, in the county of \Vilson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back Band Hooks or Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to devices for securing the back-bands of plow-harness and similar gear; and the objects of my invention are to produce a simple form of hook or fastener which may be easily applied, adjusted, and removed, which also will not cut the backband, and which will serve to connect the trace-chains to the back-band, and, furthermore, serve to keep the reins or lines in proper position.

To the above purposes my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to'desoribe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference designate like parts, and in which, also Figure 1 is a side view of a back-band with my improved hook or fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of thehook or fastener detached from the back-band; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of Fig. 2, illustrating a modified form of hook or fastener.

My improved back-band hook or fastener is formed of stout wire of any metal possessing sufiicient rigidity to resist the strains to which this class of devices is subjected.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the frame A of the device is approximately T-for1ned, there being a ring or hook on at the upper part of the frame, two oppositely-extending skeleton arms a at about the middle of said frame, and two hooks a forming the lower end of the frame. The hooks a may either lie side by side, as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be crossed over upon each other, as shown in Fig. 3.

In addition to the frame or body portion of the device I employ a keeper B, which is also of stout wire similar to the frame A. The ends of this keeper are bent over upon the main portion of the keeper, as shown at I), for a purpose to be presently explained.

The manner of using the abovedescribed device is as follows: The ends of the backband O are doubled over the keeper B, and the ends I) of the latter are caused to embrace the edges of the band. The band is now passed into the skeleton arms a and drawn through the same till the keeper strikes their outer sides. The hook or fastener will thus be held securely to the band, and may be readily adjusted or removed by simply drawing the keeper away from the frame A. The lines are passed through the loops a, and the traces are connected to the band by simply pushing one of the trace-links into engagement with the hooks a Thus it will be seen that I have produced a simple and durable form of back-band hook or fastener which may be easily applied and removed and readily adjusted, and also one which will not cut the back-band and which properly connects the lines and traces.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved back-band fastener formed of a single piece of wire bent to form the reinguide a,the laterally-extending skeleton arms at below the guide, and the hooks a depending from the skeleton arms a, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the fastener provided with the rein-guide a, the lateral-extending skeleton arms at below the guide, and the hooks a depending from the skeleton arms, of the keeper B, having its ends I) bent over to adapt them to embrace the backband, substantially as herein shown and (13-.
