ELI PERRY HASBROUCK, OF SYRACUSE, NEIV YORK.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,588, dated September 10, 1889.
Application filed Apn'l 11, 1889. Serial No. 306,762. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI PERRY HASBROUCK, of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, in the State of NewYork, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the construction of match-safes which comprise the combination,
with a match-holder, of a receptacle for burned matches, which receptacle is adapted to extinguish the burning match dropped or placed into it.
The objectof my invention is to produce such a match-safe consisting of a matchholder and means for extinguishing burning matches and holding the burned and extinguished match-stick.
My invention consists in the combination, with a match-holder, of a receiver for burning matches adapted to extinguish the flame and spark almost instantaneously after it is placed in the receptacle, the body of the receptacle being integral with the-Inatch-holder or detached therefrom.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the cap detached.
It is constructed as follows: When the match-holder and extinguishing-receiver are in one piece integral with each other,Ais the body, comprising a metallic box divided into two compartments by the partition 1, of which B is the match-holder, and O constitutes the lower part of the burn ed-match receiver or receptacle. The compartment B is provided with a hinged cover to close the top. Upon the top of the compartment 0, I place the raised or arching cover, (shown in the drawings as provided with an opening 4 upon the top thereof,) and this cover and the compartment O comprise the receptacle for the burning and burned matches.
Any ordinary means for suspending this article may be employed.
It will be observed that when a burning match is placed or dropped or inserted through the opening 4 into the cap or cover the confinement will at once cause the flame to go out, and the spark or a hot coal upon a match-stick will at once be extinguished. The safety as well as the convenience of the extinguisher will be perfectly apparent.
To empty the receptacle, I simply remove the cap or cover and turn out the matches or what may remain, holding the cover of the match-holder closed.
WVhat I claim is- A match-safe and burning-match ext-inguisher comprising a body, a central partition across the body, a hinged cover upon the match-receiver, and a detachable cover upon the extinguisher, provided with an opening to receive the burning match.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of April, 1889.
ELI PERRY IIASBROUOK.
In presence of C. W. SMITH, H. P. DENISON.
