Description

PATENTED NOV. 5, 1907.
S. Q. STANLEY. FIRE EXTINGUISHBR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. a, 1906.
lWVENTOH F SHIRLEY QSDM/LAZY wess s 2M ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
SHIRLEY Q. STANLEY, OI CASPER, WYOMING.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
To all tvhom it may concern: I lie it known that I, SnfitLEY Q. STANLEY, a citizen of t the United States, and a resident of (Jasper, in the county of Natrona and State of \\'yoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Extinguishers. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fire extinguishers, and has for its object to provide an automatic self-acting chemieal extinguisher which shall not only b inexpensive to manufacture, but novel in construction and effective in use.
In its broad comprehension, the invention may be 1 stated to reside in a peculiar receptacle, adapted to contain lire extinguishing material in granular or pow- I dered condition, an explosive cartridge arranged with- 1 in the vessel. and fuses extending from the cartridge to the exterior of the vessel, the fuses being designed, when ignited, to effect explosion of the cartridge, or igniter, as it may be termed, and thus cause violent breakage of vessel, and scattering of the extinguishing powder over considerable area, whereupon it acts to smother the flames.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
The features of construction will be referred to and 5 indicated on the drawing. by characters of reference, l hereinafter appearing. and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of one corner of a room or compartment, with a series of my improved extinguishers shown arranged therein ready for use.
In the preferred construction of my improved lire extinguisher I employ a hollow cylinder A, formed of paper, metal, or other suitable material. The open ends of the cylinder A are closed by caps 13 which should possess less strength than the cylinder, that is, be more easy to rupture, or adapted to be blown therefrom, by ignition of a cartridge located within the cylinder, as will appear further on.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
In the comprehension of my invention illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2, the cartridge or igniter consists of a chamber 0 located within the vessel A, and about equidistant from its closed ends, as shown by Fig. 2.
The chamber is formed by two spaced walls D adapting it to contain an explosive-powder E.
F designates fuses extending from powder E in the chamber .0. to the outside of the vessel A as shown by i Fig. t
The extinguishers may be arranged in series through means of connecting fuses I as shown by Fig. 1, whereby upon the explosion of the cartridge or igniter in one extinguisher, the other extinguishers in the series thereof will be set off.
It is intended that when one extinguisher, or all thereof in a connected series are set off, through action of a lighted fuse F, the caps B closing the ends of a.
vessel A shall be ruptured, or blown off, by force of the exploded cartridge, or igniter, and tire extinguishing powder G placed in compartments in the vessel A,
located on oppositesides of the igniting cartridge, as shown by Fig. 2, shall thereby be blown out through the opened ends of the vessel A, and scattered to considerable degree, over the room and thereby, effectively smother the fire of burning portions of the room, or burning material in the room.
The form of extinguisher above described is intended for general use. and may be used singly, or in connected series as occasion may require.
I claim:
A tire extinguisher consisting of an open ended vessel, frangible caps arranged closing the open ends of the vessel, an explrsive cartridge arranged in the vessel about mid: way from its ends, forming separate chambers on opposite sides thereof, a series of fuses extending from the cartridge to the outer side of the. vessel, the fuses being arranged projecting in opposite directions, and tire extinguishiug powder in said chambers.
