UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. MARTIN, OF THOMAS, WEST VIRGINIA.
ninnnxrineuisnnn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ad 25, 1914.
Application filed May 7, 1913. Serial No. 766,152.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ROBERT L. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomas, in the county of Tucker and State of 'West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-EXtinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in fire extinguishers, and more particularly to that class of extinguishers which are generi with the wall of the receptacle.
ally designated as hand grenades.
An object of this invention is the provision. of a hand grenade which is constructed of a shell of glass or other frangible material, the grenade having an expansible member disposed therein, whereby when is broken, the member will expand and there by scatter the extinguishing material contained within the shell. i
Another object 01" this invention is the provision of ahand grenade which lSPI'Qferably spherical in form, and which coniprises a shell of glass or other frangible material, the shell being adapted to receive a normally straight helical wire spring, the spring when inserted into the shell assummg a substantiallycircular form by contact .W1l3l1 the wall oil: the grenade.
With these and other objects in view, my
invention consis s in certain novel construetions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation oi? my device partly in. section; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Ilileferring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a spherical shell. or receptacle which is provided with a neck 9., through which a dil'fusible fire ex tinguishing compound 3 may be passed into the shell. A normally straight helical ex pansion springd is inserted into the receptacle through the neck 2, the spring assuming a circular shape by coming into contact The spring 4 is of such a length that, when operatively positioned within the receptacle, its ends terminate to either side of the neck 2 in order that no obstruction will be ai'lorded to the insertion within the receptacle of the fire extinguishing compound, the diameter of such spring being such as to permit its ready insertion through the neck 9.. A stopper 5 is disposed in the neck of the receptacle to maintain the compound and spring therein, and to prevent deterioration of the compound.
In the practical use of my device, the
spring 4 is first entered into the receptacle,
use either a liquid or powder chemical co1npound, as either is eflectivc in use with my improved grenade.
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is: y
As a new article of manufacture, a fire extinguisher comprising a hollow shell of frangible material provided with a restricted opening, a coil spring insertible through such opening and normally 1n constant con tact under tension throughout its entire length with the interior wall of such shell, said spring being of such a length as to terminate when in applied position to either side ofthe opening in close proximity there to, and a difi'usible compound insertible within the shell through the opening thereof and ddapted to enter between the coils of the sprin In testimony whereof I hereunto ai'lix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
