CHARLES M. BOWMAN, OF* LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND ALARM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BowMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fire Extinguisher and Alarm and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fire extinguishers and alarms.
The object of the invention is to provide a combined fire extinguisher and alarm, which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, safe and reliable in operation, and which may be used as an automatic or hand extinguisher.
With this object in view, the invention consists ofcertain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a lire extinguisher constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the box or casing of the extinguisher, which may be of any desired shape and constructed of any suitable material, the same being here shown and is preferably constructed in a rectangular, oblong form,`and is formed of pasteboard or other light material, which may be readily torn or burst open.
The upper end of the box or casing l is closed by a suitable cap or cover piece, 2, which may be readily torn or removed therefrom. In order to facilitate the removal of the cap or cover piece 2 I provide a strip of malleable metal, 3, which is arranged beneath lthe cap or cover piece in such manner that its opposite ends will project beyond the edges of the cover piece, said ends being folded downwardly along the sides of the boX in an out-of-the-way position when not in use.
. The box or casing l is adapted to be filled with a suitable extinguishing powder 4, which, when distributed onto the lire, causes the formation of carbonic acid gas, which Patented April 7', 1908.

quickly extinguishes the fire. Arranged in the owder in the center of the box and extenc ing throughout the entire length of theI be sufficient to burst the box or casing l and l to widely distribute the powder in all directions. The extension of the cartridge from end to end of the casing provides a brace or prop therefor and prevents collapse of the casing under external pressure, and it also serves to cause the radial scattering there- :from of the powder on the explosion of said cartridge.
In using the device as an automatic extinguisher, the same is located at such places where fires are likely to occur, so that when the fuse of the cracker is ignited, and the latter explodes, the powder will be automatically distributed into the fire as hereinbefore described.
In using the device as a hand extinguisher, one of the ends of the metal strip 3 is grasped and the cover thereby torn off from the upper end of the box or casing, after which the powder may be thrown from the open end of the box or emptied upon the hand and thereby scattered into the fire. device isused as a hand extinguisher, the cracker will not be exploded, and consequently is useless when the device is thus em loyed.
y providing an explosive cracker such as herein shown and described for bursting the box and distributing the powder, the noise occasioned by the exploding of the cracker will sound the alarm which will indicate to persons within hearing that the building is on Having thus fully described my invention, lwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fire extinguisher comprising a closed frangible box or casing, fire extinguishing powder filling said box or casing, an explosive cracker embedded in said extinguishing powder and extending from end to end of the casing, whereby the walls of said box are pre- When the 2 seater-sey vented from collapsing under external presmy hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witsure and the powder scattered radially and nesses.
uniformly throughout the length thereof on the explosion of the cracker, said explosive CHARLES M BOWMAN' 5 Cracker having a fuse projecting through one Witnesses:
end of the box. C. G. RAUCH,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set THOS. J. SHAAK.
