FIRE KINDLER. No. 410,488. Patented Sept. 3, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREV BRUBAKER AND WVILLIAM HENRY BRUBAKER, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,488, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed April 2, 1889. Sen'al No. 305,687- (NO model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW BRUBAKER and WILLIAM HENRY BRUBAKER, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in fire-kindlers; and it consists in the combination of a frame for holding the absorbent material, and which frame is provided with guides or holders upon its inner end, with a wire handle the prongs of which slide back and forth through the guides or holders, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of our invention is to provide a fire-kindler provided with an absorbent material which is to be saturated with coal-oil, and in which the handle can be lengthened or shortened, according to the depth of the vessel in which the fire is to be made.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of a fire-kindler which embodies our invention.
A represents a suitable perforated tapering metallic frame, which is to be filled with chalk or any suitable absorbent material, which is to be saturated with coal-oil or other inflammable substance. As here shown, the frame is made to correspond in shape to an ordinary chalk crayon, which is preferably used as an absorbent. The perforations, slots, or openings through the frame allow the flame to issue from all points of the frame alike. This frame has the two turned-in parts D formed at the inner end of the crayon, for the purpose of holding it in position, and the inner end of the frame is made semicircular, so that the crayon can be slid into position before the parts D are turned down, and the outer edges of this semicircular portion of the frame are turned over, so as to form guides or holders J, through which the prongs H of the handle L pass. These prongs slide freely back and forth through the holders, so that the length of the handle can be increased or decreased, according to the depth of the vessel or firepot in which the fire is to be lighted, and the ends of these prongs are turned upward, as shown, so as to form a stop, thus preventing them from being withdrawn from the guides. Having the handle adjustable in length also enables the kindlers to be packed in to a small space for transportation.
The handle need not be made adjustable; but it is preferable that it should.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. In a fire-kindler, the combination, with a circular or tubular body for holding an absorbent material, having its inner en d formed into a holder or guide, of a handle which has its inner end fitting and freely sliding within the guide and its end beyond the guide provided with a stop, whereby the device is extensible and the movement of the handle limited, substantially as described.
2. In a fire-kindler, the combination of the tubular body A, in which the absorbent is placed, and which is provided with the turnedin parts or corners D, and with a circular portion at its inner end having its edges formed into holders or guides, with the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
