BENJAMIN N. RETI-IEY, OF ANNA, ILLINOIS.
FLOUR-CHEST.
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,928, dated .August 13, 1889.
Application iled March 6, 1889. Serial No. 302,211. (No model.)
.To all whom t may con/007%.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN N. RETHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anna, county of Union, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flour-Chests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in iiour-chests; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the chest open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the chest closed, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring to the drawings by letter,A represents the body of the chest, which is preferably divided into several compartments for holding different kinds of iiour. In the drawings it is shown divided into two compartments by the partition a. Each compartment is provided With a cover B, having a cleat b on its under side at one side of the center, and working between the pins or lugs c, secured to the sides of the body A of the chest and to the opposite sides of the partition a. The
` pins or lugs c are arranged one in rear of and above the other, so as to be a greater distance apart than the thickness of the covers B. By Ineans of this construction the covers B will work freely between the pins or lu'gs and can be turned into a vertical position to give access to the compartments, or lowered into a horizontal position to close the said compartments, the covers being held in either position by means of the pins or lugs c and cleat b.
Above the cover B of one of the compartments is arranged a series of small compartments C for salt, spices, and the like, and above the cover C of the other compartment brackets or hooks D are secured for supporting a rolling-pin E. To the ends of the chest handles F are secured for convenience of moving the chest.
The lid G of the chest consists of the board cl and the strips e. The strips e are pivoted or hinged to the rear corners of the body A and the board d hinged to the front ends of the strips. The strips c are rabbeted on their inner sides and are provided with the lateral projections or extensions f, having beveled rear ends and fitting in cut-away portions g in the ends of the body.
To the board d and strips e are pivoted the jointed links II, by which the board d is held in a horizontal position for use as a kneading-board. The board (l is provided lwith a cleat or strip h on its hinged edge to prevent the contents of the board when used as a kneading-board from falling into the chest.
When it is desired to fill the chestor to have access to it for any similar purpose, the lid G is raised up and held in a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 3, by cleat J, the lid lswinging on the hinges of the strips e; but when the board d is to be used as a kneading-board it is turned down into a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. l, the board turning on the hinges, which connect it to the strips and is supported in said position by the links H.
Having thus described Iny invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
l. In a flour-chest, the combination, with the body of the chest, of strips pivoted to the chest, a board hinged to the free ends Vof the strips, and jointed links pivoted to the said strips and board, substantially as described.
2. In a flour-chest, the combination, with the body A of the chest having the cutaway portions g in its ends, of the strips e, pivoted to the body of the chest and provided with the projections or extensions f, the board d, hinged to the free ends of the strips, and the jointed links H, pivoted to the said strips and board, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a hour-chest, the combination, with the body of a chest provided with opposite and spaced lugs, of a cover working between the said lugs and provided with a cleat on its under surface, substantially as described.
BENJAMIN N. RETIIEY.
