U TTED STATES FFICE.
PATENT FOLDING WARDROBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,222, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed April 18, 1891.-
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANNIE E.RoB1NsoN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding \Vardrobes, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates'to improvements in folding wardrobes, andv its object is to provide a device having certain new and useful features hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same on the line :1: or of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the frame-work when closed; and Fig. 4: is a plan view of the device, showing construction of the cornice and manner of attaching the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
AA are vertical side pieces, the respective ends of which are connected by the horizontal top and bottom pieces B B, being connected by hinges K at their inner angles, thus forming a rectangular frame of any desired depth from front to rear. These top and bottom pieces are divided at the middle, and provided with hinges O on the side opposite the hinges K, so that said top and bottom pieces will fold or double inward and allow the sides A A to approach each other. A back M of canvas or other flexible material is attached all round to the rear edges of the parts A A and B B, and drawn tight when the device is open. This serves to stay these parts in position in the form of a right-angled parallelogram, and also to close the back side of the device.
D D are shelves, which are removably retained in place by cleats or strips F on the sides A A.
E is a prop hinged to the bottom B at E, which engages the under side of the lower shelf D and prevents the middle of said botsemi No. 389,459. (No model.)
tom from springing up by the strain of the back M.
p The top B is provided with a fastening, opposite the hinge O, to keep said top in place when open, which consists of the parts of a hinge O O, having a loose pintle O, which may be withdrawn when the device is to be closed. 7
The cornice consists of any suitable molding G and G, having a rabbet at its lower edge to engage the top of the case, provided with diagonally-divided posts N at the angles, having hinges K and secured in-position by hooks and eyes L, engaging the top B. Said cornice thus aids to sustain said top, and may also be detached and the ends G folded upon the front G when closed.
H is a rod attached to the said cornice, from which a curtain I is suspended by means of the rings J, to close the front of the case when in use. Only a portion of this curtain is shown in the drawings, it being understood to be of proper dimensions to cover the entire front when opened out.
hat I claim is 1. In a folding wardrobe, parallel vertical sides, horizontal top and bottom pieces divided at the middle and having hinges at said divisions on one side and hinges at the opposite sides connecting their respective endsto said side pieces, a flexible back secured to said sides, top, and bottom, and a fastening opposite the middle hinge of said top piece to keep said top piece in place when open, in combination with a removable shelf near the bottom and a prop hinged at its lower end to 'said bottom piece contiguous to' the joint therein and engaging at its upper end said shelf, whereby it will prevent the middle of said bottom from springing up by the strain of the back. v
2. In combination, parallel vertical side pieces A, top and bottom pieces B B, each hinged at its ends to said side pieces and divided and hinged at its middle, a flexible back M, secured to said pieces A and B B, a fastening, as O O located opposite the middle hinge of said top piece for keeping the same in position when open, a hinged cornice engaging said top piece and removably fastened thereto by means of hooks, a removable shelf above said bottom, and a prop pivotally secured at its lower end to said bottom piece opposite the middle hinge thereof and at its top engaging said shelf, the Whole forming a folding wardrobe which 'is perfectly braced against all strains and closing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in. presence of two Witnesses.
NANNIE E. ROBINSON.
