To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GODFREY WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sardis, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bag- Glosure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in bag-closures, the same being designed for use more especially on Hour and grain bags; and the object that I have in view is the provision of a simple and durable construction for easily and quickly closing the mouth of a filled bag without tying or sewing the same and which also allows the bag to be renewed by securing a new bag to. the closure.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description, and the novelty will be defined by the annexed claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bag-closure, showing a portion of a bag in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the closure in its collapsedor folded condition. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View through a portion of the closure and certain parts of the clamp, the closure being in its collapsed position; and Fig. 4c is a vertical transverse section through the closure and its clamp.

The bag-closure of my invention contemplates the employment of a collapsible frame made of rigid members 5 6 7 8 and a clamping device for holding the members of the frame in the collapsed condition of the closure. These members 5to 8, inclusive, consist of wooden slats or bars, although other materials may be employed. The members 5 6 are hinged together at their meeting ends, as at 9, while the other pair of members, 7 8, are hinged together, as atlO. The meeting ends of the members 5 and 8 are hinged oneto the other, as at 11, and the members 6 Tare hinged, as at 12, whereby the four members are hinged together in series, so that they may be folded compactly to the positions shown by Figs. 2 and 3. members in a way to lie flush therewith, substantially as represented by Fig. 3, thus leavingthe inner faces of the wooden bars or members in smooth condition for the reception of the upper edges of a bag A. I prefer to provide the bag with a hemmed edge, which is folded over the top edge of the members 5 to 8, inclusive, and this hemmed edge is secured to the bars of the collapsible frame by means of pliable strips of leather 13 or other equivalent material, suitable fasteners-such as tacks, nails, or screws 14being driven through the pliable strips 13 and the hemmed edge of the bag, so as to be embedded in the wooden slats or members of the collapsible frame.

One of the important features of my invention consists in the employment of a clamp for holding the closure in its collapsed condition, and in the drawings this clamp in its preferred form is shown as consisting of two cooperating coupling-plates l5 ldand a coupling screw or bolt 17. The coupling -plates 15 16 are provided with channeled inner faces which form lips 18, adapted to fit over the top and bottom edges of the members 5 7, respectively, of the bag-frame, and said couplingplates are secured firmly to said members by suitable fasteners, such as screws 19. The couplingplate 15 is fastened solidly to the member 5, near one end thereof, so as to project beyond said member and to have overlapping relation to the adjacent end of the member 8. (See Fig. 3.) The other coupling-plate 16 is fastened to the member 7 to project beyond the end portion thereof and have overlapping engagement with the member 6, as clearly shown by said Fig. 3, whereby the channeled projecting portions of the coupling-plates 15 16 form sockets to receive the end portions of the members 6 8 when the bag frame is collapsed and folded. The clamping-screw 17 is mounted loosely in a projecting upper portion of the plate 15, and said screw is adapted to have threaded engagement with a female threaded opening 20,

which is provided in the upper portion of the companion coupling-plate 16.

When it is desired to open the bagto the position shown by Fig. 1, the screw 17 is turned in one direction, so as to withdraw it from the plate 16, whereupon the members of the collapsible frame may be spread by turning them on their hinges, thus allowing the mouth of the bag to be opened very fully for the free introduction of the material into the bag. It is evident that the bag may be held or suspended by any suitable means for the purpose of placing the load therein; but when it is desired to securely close the mouth of the bag the frame is collapsed by moving the members 5 and 8 toward the members 6 and 7, or vice versa, after which the free end of the screw 17 is caused to engage with the threaded opening of the plate 16, whereby the coupling-plates l5 16 may be drawn into cooperative relation by the rotation of the screw, so as to securely and efiectually close the mouth of the bag.

It will be understood that the fasteners 14 may be withdrawn in order to remove the binding-strips 13, of leather or like material, thus removing the collapsible closure-frame from th e bag and allowing a new bag to be attached to said frame.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bag-fastener comprising a plurality of members hinged one to the other, cooperating coupling-plates each fastened to one member and disposed to overlap a hinge-joint and an adjacent member in the collapsed condition of the members, and a clamp for rigidly coupling said plates.

2. A bag-closure consisting of a collapsible frame having hinged members, companion plates fastened to certain of the members,and a coupling-screw mounted in one of said plates and having threaded engagement with the other plate.

3. A bag-closure consisting of a series of members hinged one to the other and forming a collapsible frame, channeled clampingplates fastened to certain members of the frame in positions to overlap other members of the frame, and a coupling-screw mounted in one of said plates and adapted to have threaded engagement with the other plate.
