IM PROVED SOFA-BEDSTEAD.
To .'LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MAGEE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the class of folding or extension bedsteads; and the object of my present invention is an arrangement of parts forming a self-extending or unfolding bedstead attachment to an Ordinary sofa or lounge.
Figure l represents the article in its folded form. Fig. 2 represents the same partially unfolded. Fig. 3 represents the completely extended or unfolded bedstead.
A represents a sofa or lounge. B is a rect angular frame, formed of three leaves, b b' b", jointed transversely so as to close np in three folds, as represented in Fig. l. The inner leaf, b, of the frame B is connected to the sofa by arms, C G', hinged to the under side of said leaf about its midlength, and to the sofa at or near its lower rear edge. Springs D, made of caoutchouc or otherv suitable material, cause the frame B to open of itself, when liberated by raising a catch, E, or otherwise. The unfolding of the frame is accompanied by the unfolding of the legs F F', which are hinged to the frame at or nearthe joints thereof and drop down in the act of unfolding, partly by their weight and partly by the tension of the cords G G', Whose ends are secured to the sofa. A caoutchouc or other spring, H, extending from the outer leg, F, to the outer leaf, b, serves the double purpose of holding the legs F F and the frame B in their extended positions. There may be a shoulder, I, to serve as an abutment for the inner leaf, b.
I claim herein as new andof myinvention- The arrangement of sofa or lounge A, folding frame B, arms U C', springs D and H, legs F F', and cords G G', the whole forming a combined sofa and self-unfolding bedstead, substantially as set forth.
