Description

J; 0. HIBBARD.
MUST'AGHB PROTECTOR. No. 408.013. Patented July 30, 1889.
q vih wooco gvvvawfo'c v 306- @ZM GHOWW M enlarged portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN O. HIBBARD, OF HARTXVELL, OHIO.
M USTACH E-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,013, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed November 15,1888- Serial No. 290,885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. HIBBARD, (having made oath of my intention to'become a citizen of the United States,) a resident of Hartwell, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a separable mustache-protector which shall be self-adjusting to fit varying diameters and thicknesses of drinking-vessels.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, Figure 1 is a top view of my improved mustache-protector as applied to a large-sized drinkingvessel. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the top portion of the cup shown in Fig. 1, with the protector attached, the dotted lines showing the position of the central plate-flanges. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the protector removed from the vessel, showing the relative positions of the different parts when applied to a'large drinking-vessel, such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the preferable form of spring mechanism for adjusting the same. Fig. 4 is a top view of the central plate, showing the preferable form of circular slots therein to admit of adjustment to vessels of varying diameters and thicknesses, as will more fully hereinafter appear. Fig. 5 is a top view, on a smaller scale, of a vessel provided with the mustache-protector, showing the relative position of the two end clamp-plates when applied to such a vessel.
As preferably constructed, my invention consists of a central plate A and two end clamp-plates 1313. To each of the plates Bis riveted a lug a, which will admit of said plate being rotated thereon, which lug is adapted to enter the slot b in the plate A through the The central plate A 'is preferably provided at each end, for a part only of its circumference, with the upturned flanges Z), in which are made suitable cuts W, in which one end of each spring D is secured, the other end of said springs being bent to tit the configuration of the lugs a, attached to the clamp-plates B, as
shown in Fig. 3. One end of each spring be ing connected to the plate A and the other end of said springs being connected to the lugs a, attached to the clamp-plates B, the tendency is to continually draw said plates inward through the medium of said springconnection and clamp the vessel between the flanges of said clamp-plates and the central plate.
The circular-shaped slots in the plate A and the pivotal connection between the plates B B and lugs a will admit ofthe mustache-protector being applied to vessels of varying diameters and thicknesses. Any operative form of springconnection between the central plate A and lugs a may be employed.
The central plate A and the clamp-plates B B are preferably made of German silver, but may be made of any other suitable material as, for example, papier-mach, celluloid, &c.
The ends of the plate A not being a true circle and the clamp-plates being pivotally connected to lugs a admit of the vessel be ing clamped between the outer flange 12 of the clamp-plates B and that. portion of flange 1) next the mou th-openin g of the central plate A, thus preventing the liquid from flowing between said flanges.
The advantages of my improved mustacheprotector are apparent. It is ornamental and answers every purpose of the ordinary mustache-cup. It is especially valuable to traveling men, as it can be carried in thepocket without any inconvenience, and can be readily adjusted and applied to any ordinary-sized drinking-vessel. The construction is such that no liquid can escape except through the mouth-opening. Vixen it is desired to clean the protector, all that is necessary to do is to disengage the springs from around the lugs, when the clamp-plates are free to be removed from the central plate, the lugs passing through the enlarged portions of the slots.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A mustache-protector consisting of a cen tral plate A, having circular slots 1) therein, and clamp-plates B B, having the lugs 64 pivotally connected thereto, said lugs projecting through said slots 1), and suitable spring-connection between said central plate and lugs a, substantially as set forth.
2. A mustache-protector consisting of a cen- 5 tral plate A, having the circular slots 1) and upturned flanges b, the latter having the slots 19 cut therein, and the clamp-plates]; B, having the lugs to pivotally connected thereto,
and down Wardly-turned flanges b and springs D, the latter being secured at one end in the [0 slots 12 and at the other end attached to the lugs a, substantially as set forth.
- JOHN O. HIBBARD. 'Attest:
