WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,152, dated July 1e, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BECK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lashing-lliachines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to washing-machines which are provided with a pivoted reciprocating rubber; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through the machine, the dotted lines indicating the position of the pivoted parts when swung over. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the machine.

A is the wasli-tub, provided with legs o., and a is a board for the attachment of the wringer at one end of the machine.

B is the concave wash-board, consisting of a series of `grooved slats secured in position bythe end pieces l), of galvanized iron, and b is a slanting end piece at one end of the washboard next to the wringer-board.

C is the drip-board at the other end of the tub, provided with a ledge c on its top edge to prevent it from sliding down into the tub.

I) is a rod pivoted in a groove inthe under side of the drip-board, and having a cranked arm (Z at eael1cml,wl1icliis pivoted in a plate d at the top of each side of the machine. This cranked pivot-rod permits the board to be raised to the vertical position shown by the dotted lines, so that the wet may drain on it into the tub.

E is the convex rubber, provided with a series of grooved slats, and e is a hinged lid secured by a spring-catch e', by means of which access may be had to the interior of the rubber.

F are the pivot side rods of the rubber, provided with pivots f at their ends, which are journaled in the plates d at the top ot' the tub. Straight portions g are provided at the ends of rods F at right angles to them, and these portions g rest upon the top of the tub when the machine is in use and support the rubber.

G is the rubber pivot-rod, which passes clear through the rubber, and is connected to the inner ends of the straight supporting portions g by the vertical arms g.

l are plates secured to the sides of the rubber and journaled upon the rubber pivotrod G. This form of pivot-rod for connecting the rubber with the tub permits the rubber to be freely reciprocated when in use and allows it to be thrown over into the position indicated by the dotted lines.

Il are uprights pivoted upon the pivot-rod G inside the rubber, and h is the handle-bar which passes through the top of the said uprights for .reciprocating the rubber. The up rights are made adjustable, and may be secured at various angles with the rubber by means of the locking-rods I, which are pro vided with handles t at their upper ends, and which slide in the grooves z" in the sides ot' the nprights.

J are plates on the said uprights for retaining the locking rods in position in the grooves t".

K are curved plates secured inside the rubber for the lower ends of the uprights to work in, and 7c are holes in the bottoms of the plates for the locking-rods to engage with and thereby hold the uprights at any desired angle with the rubber.

lVhat I claim isl. In a washing-machine, the combination, with a reciprocating pivoted rubber, of adjustable nprights provided with handles and pivoted to the rubber, locking-rods attached to the uprights, and plates secured to the rubber and provided with holes for the locking-rods to engage with, so that the uprights may be held in various positions, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the washing-machine tub, of the sloping' drip-board provided with the supporting-ledge c and the rod D, pivoted in a groove in the under side of the drip-board and provided with the cranked pivot-arm (l at each end, journaled at the top edges of the tub, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
