Description
,gitane @gtr-utenti JOHN J. KOCH, OF
REPUBLIC, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 86,555, dated Febr/ umg 2, 1869.
IMPROVED WASEINQMACHINIL The Schedule r'efen-ed to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the lame.
To all whom 'it 'may concern Beit known that I, J OHX J. Koen, of Republic, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tashing-Machiue and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangementof a washinglniaelline, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a transverse vertical section, and
Figure 2V is a side elevation, part in section.
A represents a stationary semicircnlar tub, resting on legs B B, and havin g'along one side a-series of slnail rollers, a a, which have their bearings in curved slats c c, secured one to each end of the tub.
From the centre of each end of the tub A, a stand ard, D, projects upwards, 'and from these standards a smaller tub, E, is suspended, by means ofthe set-screws bb, which pass through the standards D D, and through similar standards, F F, on theinner tub.
At the front side of the movable tub E are placed two arms G G, one at each end, which are connected by means of a cross-bar, H, forming a handle for working the tub backwards and forwards on its pivots, the set-screws b b.
In the endsof thetub E, near the front side, are
secured a series of slats c c, placed one above the other,`
a suitabledistance', and running -the whole length of the tub from end to end.
Across the centre ofthe two tubs, A and E, is placed a shaft, I, which is held by the two set-screws b b, these screws thus forming pivots on which the shaft may re volve.
. From the shaft I, two arms J J descend into the inner tub E, and to the lower ends of said arms the rubber-board K is hinged, as shown in the drawings.
The shaft I from which the rubber is thus suspended,
is prevented from turning on itspivots, by means of two braces L L, hinged to the arms J J, and secured at the rear side of the tub A by booksff.
The machine is now in position for operating, the clothes being placed between the rub-board K and the slats o c. For the purpose of removing the clothes, un-
hook the arms or braces L L', and throw the rub-board backward over the machine.
Another inode of operating the machine is: replace the rnb-board K to its original position, with the exception of hooking up the 'braces L L vby means of the hooks 71I hon top of the shaft I. Then turn the revolving-tub E forward one-half round, a 1d place a pin in the hole li, in the end of the tub, which will hold it in the position shown in fig. 2.
Place the clothesin the stationary tub A, release the rub-board K, by turning the arm d out ofthe loop c, in which position it can be used as an ordinary rubboard, rubbing the clethes between the rnb-board K and the rollers a a.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the two rubbing surfaces, c a and c c, with the hinged dash-board K, attached to the arms J, as and for the purposes described.
2. The arrangement of the swinging shaft I, arms J J, hinged rub-board K, loop c, arm (Z, and braces L L, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 3d day of December, 1868.
Y JOHN J. KOCH. Witnesses ROBERT LYsLn, JOHN H. 000K.
