CORNELIA M. .IAOOBY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-TI-IIRDS TO FRANK TOMBRIDGE AND JULIUS J. SAITZ, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIR-ROCKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,400, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed February 7, 1889. Serial No. 298,950. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIA M. J ACOBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Rockers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of chair-rockers which are provided with adjustable clamping devices, whereby the rockers can be removably attached to ordinary chairs of different sizes, and has for its object to insure a positive and direct hold on the legs of the chair and obviate the projection or unsightly appearance of any part of the clamping devices on the outside of the rockers.
My invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an inside elevation of arockerconstructed and applied to the legs of an ordinary chair, broken away, according to my invention; and Fig. 2, a plan thereof; Fig. 3, a
2 5 detached inside view of rear portion of rocker, broken away, with clamping device attached thereto, as seen to the right of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a sectional plan thereof on line 1 1 in Fig. 3; and Figs. 5 and 6 transverse sections on lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, in Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
a represents the rocker, to the inside face of which near its front end is secured by screws 3 5 b a rectangular or other suitably-shaped box or casting 0, having its top and front side open and its ends d d and back 6 closed.
To the inner upright (or inclined) face of the end d is fixed a covering or cushion f, of
c rubber or other yielding material having preferably a concave face transversely, while through the end d works longitudinally a screw-bolt g, on the end of which within the box 0 is swiveledcentrally a clamp it, having a cushion 1', corresponding with and facing the cushion f.
At a suitable distance rearward from the box a is arranged along the inside face of the rocker a a second box or casting a, which is provided with a cushion f, screw-bolt g,
clamp h, and cushion 1', similar in construction and arrangement to the corresponding parts of the box 0. On the back 6' of the box 0' is formedor attached longitudinally with the box 0 adovetail projection j, which is inserted endwise (by means of a clearing-hole it) into a corresponding dovetail groove or slot 70, formed longitudinally in the inside face of and partially through the rocker a, so that the box 0 will be thereby held trans-.60 versely to and at the same time capable of longitudinal movement or adjustment along the inside face of the rocker a to the extent allowed by the length of the slot 10.
The lower part of the front leg m of the chair being inserted within the box 0 against the front cushion f, the box 0 is moved or adjusted along the inside face of the rocker a until in the proper position for receiving the rear leg n, which is then placed in the box 0 and the clamps h h moved inward by turning their respective screws 9 g until the legs m n of the chair are thereby tightly clamped between the cushions f t' and f 1'', respectively, whereby the rocker a is firmly secured to the chair.
The advantages of this invention are that the clamps h h being swiveled centrally to the bolts g g and in directline with the chairlegs, the maximum clamping pressure is 01)- 8o tained and distributed uniformly on the chairlegs, thereby insuring a more positive hold of the rocker thereto and lessening the danger of the rocker becoming loose or detached; and, furthermore, as the hole It and groove is, 8 for receiving the box 0, are only formed partially through the rocker a, there is no projection or view of any part of the device on the outside of the rocker.
For rotating the screw-bolts g g, I may use .a detachable key or spanner, which is placed on the external square-shaped end of the bolts.
I claim,as my invention 1. In a chair-rocker, the combination of rocker a, provided with a beveled groove is, 5 box or casting c, constructed substantially as described, and having a dovetail projection j, which is inserted within a corresponding groove or slot 70, formed along the rocker a, with a screw-bolt g ,working through one end of box 0' and carrying a clamp h, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In a chair-rocker, the combination of a rocker a, provided with a beveled groove 70, a box or casting 0, having dovetail projection j inserted within groove 7c, of rocker a, one end of said box 0 having a .rubber or other cushion f, clamp h, provided with rubber cushion z", and a screw-bolt g, swiveled centrally to clamp h, substantially as shown, and 10 lor the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses, this 2d day of February, 1889.
