COMBINED TOBACCO AND PIPE BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. KALDEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Tobacco and Pipe Box, of which the following is a clear and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to that class of boxes which are arranged to be subdivided into compartments for holding different articles, and my improvement consists of a box provided with means whereby two compartments can be formed in the box, both of which are equally accessible, one of which is designed to contain a quantity of smoking-tobacco, and the other or upper one being so formed that a smoking-pipe may be neatly and securely held therein, the top of the box and the division-piece being so made and arranged in relation to each compartment that the contents of both compartments are visible from the outside of the box. These boxes are more particularly designed with a view of meeting the wants of travelers, and are constructed so that they may easily be distributed on board of railway-trains, boats, and other public conveyances, and convey at sight to the traveler the contents of each box.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the particular novel features of .my i11- vention, Figure 1 is a plan view of my combined tobacco and pipe box; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1, showing the depth of the box and shape of the compartments.

Let a represent in general a box of rectangular form, and preferably made of metal, having sides 0 c, bottom I), closed end d, open top provided with a sliding cover or top piece e, and open end fitted with a removable capshaped cover f. The sliding top piece is of glass, and within the box is arranged a partition Z, likewise made of glass, which extends from end to end of the box a, dividing it into two compartments 0 and p, the upper one being of a size and shape to adapt it to receive a smoking-pipe s, and the lower one being designed to hold a quantity of tobacco for use with the pipe. As both the sliding top piece of the box and its partition are of glass, the contents of both compartments are plainly visible from the outside, and as the box is particularly designed for tourists or travelersuse, and obtainable 011 railwaytrains, &c., the style of pipe and qualityof tobacco may be determined without opening the box. The top part of the box is cut away, leaving a projecting edge g, and below this edge, on each side of the box, is provided a narrow flange h, which constitutes, in connection with the said edge g, grooves 2' i, extending from end to end of the box a, in which the top piece e may readily slide. WVithin and on each side of the box are also provided two narrow flanges, extending diagonally from end to end, forming grooves 91 n, in which the glass partition Z, which divides the box a, is made to slide. The upper compartment is of a shape and size toipermit the bowl and stem of the pipe to be held snugly between the adjacent glasses; but as a further protection against the movement of the pipe in handling the box I provide a ring 25, which projects from the box and has a tapering hole through which the stem of the pipe is passed, so that it may be secured against movement.

The body a of the box may be extended to admit of a compartment q being formed at the closed end for holding matches, and which is fitted with a sliding cover 4''.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined tobacco and pipe box 0011- sisting of a rectangular body having an open end fitted with a removable cover, and an open top having a sliding top piece of glass, and having grooves extending obliquely from end to end, and a sliding partition of glass separating it into two compartments, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A combined tobacco and pipe box consisting of a box having an open end with a removable cover, and an open top with a sliding top piece of glass, and a sliding division-piece of glass separating the interior into two compartments, the upper one being adapted to hold a pipe, and the interior of both compartments being Visible from the outside of the box, substantially as shown and described.

A combined tobacco and pipe box consisting of a rectangular body having an open end fitted with a removable cover, and open top with a sliding top piece of glass, and having oblique grooves with a sliding partition 10 of glass separating it into two compartments,

the upper one having a ring-support for the pipe, substantially as shown and described.
