A. SEARLS.
DASH RAIL FOR VEHICLES.
No. 405.915. Patented June 25, 1889.
' each end jointly with red A.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSON SEARLS, OF NEIVARK, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGN OR TO THE SEARLS- RANDALL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DASH-RAIL FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,915, dated J'une 25, 1889.
Application filed April 9, 1889- Serial No. 306,629. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANSON SEARLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dash-Rails for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the illvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to dash-rails for vehicles; and it consists in two rails or drawn rods bent and joined together at each end to form handles, and held by posts through which the rods pass; also, in plume-holders made a part of the posts, all as herein more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a completed double rail, and Fig. 2 is a top view showing the hole f in plume-holder F and rods A and B.
Two or more posts 0 are used, made of brass or any suitable material, and provided with bosses and holes D, that receive the rods A and B, and are attached to the vehicle by bolts E or any well-known means.
The rail A, made of drawn brass or suitable material, passes through the posts at D, and is turned upward, then inward, and down to the points I), where it is joined to red B. The ends of red A may terminate below in a ball or other desirable finish.
The rod B, of like material to red A, passes through the upper holes D, and is joined at Z) to rod A, forming a completed handle a at The rods A and B are secured to posts C by solder or any wellknown means.
A plume or bell holder F, formed 011 the top of posts 0, is provided with a hole f, in which a plume may be inserted and held by the posts C and rails A and 13, attached thereto.
The posts C are preferably made of castbrass, and may be turned and finished with the plume-holder a part thereof. The rods of drawn metal have a surface ready to polish, and all may be cheaply polished and plated or ornamented in any desired way.
The handles at A may be of any desired form or size.
By the posts and two rods I am enabled to make a rail, with handles of drawn metal in the place of cast or forged rails and handles heretofore in use, strong and durable and easily finished.
The panel formed by rods A and B and posts C may be filled with a screen, and thereby a screen-dash produced of any size or design.
The red A may be turned from the point of its highest bend and enter the hole f in holder F, dispensing with rod 13 from bosses D to points 1), thereby forming a handle and double rail of all the parts in a modified form, that dispenses with the means of holding the plume by using the holes f to hold ends of red A.
In construction the red A is first bent at one end to its proper form, or as shown. Then two or more posts 0 are slid on the other end and that end bent to the same form. The rod B is then inserted in the posts 0 at D, and each end attached to the red A at l) by entering holes in red A, or by any well-known means. 011 the frame thus formed by rods A and B the posts 0 may be slid or adj ustedto any desired distance apart and then attached to the rods A and 15, as above described.
Dash-rails of this description are usually made of various lengths to fit the varying widths of vehicle-fronts, and the adjustment above described makes it easy to place the posts 0 or bolts E at the proper place to enter holes already prepared. These dash-rails may be made as an article of manufacture and attached to the vehicle after each is completed.
In place of the bolts E the posts 0 may be finished with an ordinary dash-foot of any form by which the dash-rail may be attached to the vehicle.
The posts C may be fastened to the rods A and B by set-screws or like devices through 2. The posts 0 and rodsA and B, in e0mthe bosses D, and adjusted on said rods Whenbination with holder F, as and for the purpose IO ever-desired. 7 set forth.
Havin described my invention I desire sew 5 cured b; Letters Patent- ANDON SEARLS' 1. The posts 0 and rods A and B, bent and witnesses: joined to form a double rail and handle a, as FREDERICK WVOODRUFF,
and for the purpose set forth. SAML. J. SMITH.
