UNITED S'rA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM STAEHLEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE WATTIS, OF SAME PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOILET-MIRRORS.
Specifioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,985, dated October 31, 1876; application filed May 29, 1876.
To all who'm it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM STAEHLEN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toilet Mirrors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to have a oonvenient hand toilet-mirror, provided with a simple stand or loaded base. Said stand has an adj ustable sleeve for holding the handle with the mirror, and has a loose collar on said sleeve and several shoulders of different dimension to engage with said collar, so that in a convenient manner said mirror may be adjusted and set readily with the stand to the desired requisite inclination for toilet use, and that the same mirror may be used by hand at any time by withdrawing it from the stand.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view or front elevation of the mirror when used With the stand, and made according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal Vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mirror when used by hand and detached from its stand. Fig. 4 is a detached rear view of the stand, its sleeve being shown'removed. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the junction of the handle with the mirrorthe parts shown bisected, With exception `of the screw enterin g the back of the mirror.
A represents the mirror-glass, which is oval, and is set in a frame, B, circumscribing its periphery, and made of sheet metal. ln the back of the frame is fitted the wood back O, against 'which the glass is resting. D represents the handle of the mirror. It is made hollow or tubular, and of metal. The top end of the same has the Wood-screw E secured in it, which enters the Wood back O, and thereby the handle D is readily secured to the mirror. The Wood back is held to the glass by means of the frame B, which overlaps it, as shown. F represents the loaded stand. .lt has an iron bot-tom, G, and its base is of proper dimension to stand firmly. Its upper portion is made hollow, and of a reduced dimension, and has several shoulders, H H, and an opening or slot, I, through the top and rear, as shown in Figs.
2 and 4. The shoulders H nearer to the base are of larger dimensions, as shown, than those above.
Through the slot I is employed a sleeve or tube, J, which has its opening of a corresponding dimension with the diameter of the handle D to receive the same and hold it properly, and allow its being withdrawn from the said sleeve with facility. Over the said sleeve is employed a loose collar, K, and the lower end of the same is attached to the bottom of the base F by means of pivots L L, which are part of or are secured on the lower portion of said sleeve, and are fitted to turn loose in upwardprojccting eyes M M, either formed on or se cured to said bottom, as shown. Said sleeve turns readily on its pivots or trunnions, and passes freely in the slot I, and may be set upright or may be thrown back in said slot in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2. The loose collar K is made larger on its lower end, so as to drop over the top end of the stand suficiently to stop the sleeve and mirror while nearly in its most inclined position. For a less-inclined position, the said collar drops down lower upon one of the lower shoulders, H, and, when set in Vertical position, said collar drops over the lowest shoulder, as shown in Fig. 1. When the stand F and collar K are made of spun metal, they may be made for a limited expense, and very handsome. The whole toilet-mirror can be made for a limited expense, and of handsome appearance, and Veryvconvenient for use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The mirror-frame B, the wood back O, the glass A, and handle D, with the screw E to join the parts together, all combined substantially as and for the purpose herein mentioned.
2. The stand F, provided with the slot I, the shoulders H H, and the collar K, the bottom G with the eyes M M, and the sleeve J with the pivots L, all combined substantially as and for the purpose herein stated.
