RACK FOR HAY-WAGONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,190, dated June 11, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERWIN J. TRACY,'a citizen of {the United States, and a resident of Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Racks for Hay-Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to folding racks for hay-wagons.

The object is to produce a rack which may be placed on the body of an ordinary farmwagon, and which will enable one man to load the wagon with hay and unload the same with perfect ease; furthermore to produce a rack which will render the use of ropes unnecessary to hold the hay in place while transporting it from one place to another; furthermore to produce a rack which shall be simple of construction, efficient, and durable in use and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With these objects in view the invention consists in a rack having folding end and side wings and means for holding the same open while the rack is being loaded with hay; furthermore, in the combination and operation of the various parts whereby its objects are attained.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the rack mounted upon an ordinary wagonbody; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing the folding end.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the rack, which is designed to be removably secured to the wagon-body B. This rack consists of the cross-pieces O, which form the base of the rack, the folding sides 0, and the folding ends E. At the outer ends of the cross-pieces C and on each side of the frame are secured rails c, to which are secured slotted standards 0, in which uprights c are pivoted, the said uprights having slats 0 secured thereto, which, in conjunction with the uprights, form the sides of the rack.

D designates braces that are attached to the end uprights and pass through standards d, secured to slotted standards d on the crosspieces 0, in which the uprights e are pivoted. These uprights are also provided with slats 6 which, in connection with the uprights 6, form the ends E of the rack. The lower'end of each of these braces is provided with a hook d, which is designed to engage the edges of the openings in the standards (I, through which it passes to hold the sides of the vertical rack while the hay is being loaded. The sides of the rack are further braced by means ofrods (P, which pass through two or more of the uprights and prevent their being forced out and thus bind against the standards 0'.

E designates the ends of the rack. These are constructed similar to the sides of the rack, only that the supporting-braces e are made of two pieces 6 and e, which braces are pivoted at their upper ends to the uprights 6 and their lower ends to the inside of the wagon-body by means of bolts 0 as shown in dotted lines at 6 and are hinged in the center, in order to allow the ends of the rack to be folded in fiat when not in use. Then this folding rack is to be used, the ends and sides are raised and are held in position against falling in or out, as described. The hay is then loaded into the same, and may be transported from one place to another without the use of the ropes usually employed to hold the hay in place. When the rack is not in use, the sides and ends may be folded in to prevent its taking up too much room, and when it is desired to remove the same from the wagon it is only necessary to turn the hooks a, which are secured to the body B, and release the links a, securedto the rack, and then remove the bolts 0, when the device may be removed from the wagonbody.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
