NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MURRAY LEWVIS ROBINSON, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
STOCK-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,373, dated March 3, 1885 Application filed September 22, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURRAY L. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stock-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to hay-racks and stock-racks combined; and the invention consists in the construction and novel'arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the devices arranged for use as a hay-rack. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the hay-rack. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the device arranged for use as a stock-rack.
Referring by letter. to the accompanying drawings, A designates a wagon-box having .its transverse bottom strips, B, O, and D, pro- 25 jecting at its sides, as shown.
The projecting ends of these bottom strips are provided on their upper faces with metal plates E, having central holes, E, which form steps for the lower ends of the swinging braces F when the device is in use as a hay-rack.
On the inner faces of the sides of the wagonbox A in the corner are secured straps I, having eyes at their upper ends, in which eyes the pintles of the straps M on the side racks, U, turn when the device is being converted from a stock-rack to a hay-rack, and vice versa.
At the front end, the box A is provided with a ladder, P, which is hinged at its lower end to blocks P in the front corners of the box, so that it can be folded down in the box, and also turned up vertically, when desired. This ladder P is provided with short hookrods P secured to the inner edges of its side rails, Q, and also with longer hook-rods R, secured to the outer edges of said side rails. The rear end of the box A is provided with a shorter ladder, S, hinged to blocks S in the rear corners at the bottom of the box A, and the side rails, S of the shorter ladder are provided with long hook-rods T and short hookrods V. Side racks, U, have the lower ends (No model.)
of their connecting-cleats or cross-bars V pro vided with strap-hooks M, which are designed to engage the eyes 0 of the straps I to con nect the side racks with the wagon-box A. The swinging braces F are secured to the outer faces of the cross-bars V by staples V, and the lower ends of the bracesFare stepped in the holes in the metal plates E.
When the side boards are arranged to form a hay-rack in connection. with the box, the longer hook-rods R engage staples in the front faces of the end cleats of the side racks, and when the device is arranged as a stock-rack the longer hook-nods R swing loosely, and shorter hook-rods P, secured to the opposite edges of the side rails of the ladders from the points where the longer hook-rods are secured, are caused to engage the staples of the side racks, as shown in Fig. 4. By this arrangement the device can be quickly converted from a hayrack to a stock-rack, or vice versa; or the ladders and side racks may be entirely removed and stored away, and the box may be used as an ordinary wagon-box, if desired. It will be observed, also, that the ladders may be folded down within the box, and the wagon may be used in this shape for many purposes without removing the ladders. The lower ends of the connecting-cleats V are notched to fit the edges of the box A.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. ,The combination, with the wagon-box having side straps with eyes at their upper ends, of the longer hinged ladder at the front and shorter hook-rods, and the shorter hinged ladder at the rear of said box provided also with longer hook-rods and shorter hook-rods, and the side racks provided with the straphooks engaging the eyes of the straps, and also provided with staples for the rods, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the wagon-box provided with the side stakes, I, and the projecting bottom strips, of the ladders at the front and rear ends of the box, the side racks, U, having their connecting-cleats or cross-bars V notched at the inner end to'fit snugly over of said box provided with longer hook-rods the box and provided with strap-hooks M, v
of the end ladders, P S, both hinged within the body so as to be capable of folding down, and the side ladders journaled to the sides of the body, and means, substantiallyas described, for detachably connecting both end ladders to the side ladders to cause the latter to rest in an inclined position forming the hay-rack, or in a vertical position to form the stock-rack, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the wagon-body,
of the end ladders both hinged within the body at the ends thereof, and the side ladders journaled to the sides of the body, and short and long hooked rods provided on the end ladders, whereby the long rods serve to hold the side racks in an inclined position and the short rods to support the same in a vertical line, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
'MURRAY LEWIS ROBINSON.
