M.,L. ROBINSON.
COMBINED STOCK AND HAY RACK.
No. 850,996. Patented Oct. 19, 1886,

Nrrisn STATES MURRAY L. ROBINSON,
PATENT OFFICE,
OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED STOCK AND HAY RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,996, dated October 19. 1886.
Application filed August 26,1886. Serial No. 211,940. (X0 model.)
i" 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IIIURRAY L. RomNsoN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stock and Hay Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
My invention relates to improvements in combined hay and stock racks, and is more particularly an improvement on Patent No. 313,373, granted to me March 3, 1885. In the rack described in said patent swinging braces were used to support the adjustable side racks. In the present i nvention I dispense with the swinging braces and use a truss-brace extending from end to end of the side racks.
A further improvement consists in dispens ing with one set of the hook-rods which were used to hold the side racks in position, and using only one set of hook-rods so arranged that they can be adjusted to support the side racks in either a vertical or inclined position.
The particular construction and arrangement of the various parts of my said invention I will now proceed to point out and describe, reterencebcinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a rack embodying my invention, showing the same arranged for use as a hay-rack; and Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the rack, showing the same arranged for use as a stock-rack.
Referring to said drawings, A represents a wagon-box; B, a ladder or rack hinged to the bottom of the forward end of the wagon-box; G, a shorter ladder or rack hinged to the bottom of the rear end of the wagon-box. Said ladders or racks can be folded down in the bottom of the wagon-box or raised to a vertical position when the rack is to be used.
D D are removable and adjustable side racks hinged to the sides of the wagon-box.
To the outer faces of the cross-bars E of the side racks I secure a truss-brace, F, the ends of which pass through eyes 0 in the end braces, E. Said ends of the truss-brace are screw-threaded and provided with suitable nuts, 0, by means of which the brace can be tightened or loosened, as desired.
H H are hook-rods secured to the ladders or as a stock rack, the rods H are hooked into staples h on the proximate racks D D. This holds the side racks in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1.
, To use the rack as a stock-rack, I cross the hook-rods H and hook them into the staples of the opposite racks, as shown in Fig. 2. This holds the side racks in a vertical position.
By using the truss-brace instead ofthebracerods, and arranging the hook-rods so that only one set is required on each end ladder or rack, I simplify and cheapen the construction of my rack, and at the same time strengthen the same and render it much easier of adjustment.
Having thus fully described my invention, I what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the u'agoirbox A and hinged side racks, D D, of the end ladders or racks, I C, provided with the hook-rods H H, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, whereby said hookrods can be adjusted to secure the side racks in either ayertical or inclined position.
2. The combination, with the wagoirbox A and the side racks, D, provided with the truss-braces F F, of the end ladders or racks, BO, provided with the hook-rods H H, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
