IMPROVEMENT m- FQLDING T-YPE-CASE STANDS.
Specificationforming part of ream Patent Noi'l 73.114, dated February 8, 1876, application filed November 3, 1875. i
' in position for use. Fig. 2 shows the holding-braces released, and the stand partially folded. Fig. 3 shows the stand folded up into compact form forshipment or storage.
Fig. 4 is a modified form of brace; and Fig. 5 a view of oneof the case-supporting bars detached from the stand.
.The improvement consists in a type-case stand formed of angle-iron, the several parts being so connected together as to permit the stand to be folded into small space for shipment or storage, as will be fully hereinafter set forth.
The corner and centralposts l and 2 are formed of angle-iron, and are connected together to form a frame-work by flat bars 3 and 4. The front and rear bars 4 are attached to the posts 1 and 2 by means of pivots 10, which may be double-headed bolts or screws, which pass through holes in the bars 4, and screw into the posts, or are fastened in place by nuts. The cross-bars 3, joining the front and rear posts together, and forming the cross-ties of the frame, arejrigidly connected to. the posts by any approved means. The ledges or ribs 6, forming the racks which support the cases of types, and
which are made of angle-iron of L form, are
attached to the'frontand rearposts 1 by bolts or rivets, or are recessed at their ends so as to embrace and slide upon the projecting flanges of the said posts. They may be made of wood and attached in the common manner.
The upper front and rear bars 4: are provided with angular braces 7, fixed upon them at such points that their lower ends will types. Braces maybe supplied at the ends and be duplicated upon the lower bars 4, if it is found desirable. These braces may be wholly detachable from the frame, and be provided with projecting arms 9, as in Fig. 4, which arms 9 will enter sockets at proper points in the posts and rails, where they may be secured by nuts screwed upon their ends,
or by pins passed through suitable holes therein.
When the braces are detached from the frame it may be folded flat, as in Fig. 3, the pivots 10 permitting the posts and'the parts rigidly secured to them to thus swing upon the rails 4 until the said parts rest upon each other, as shown in said figure, in which compact form the stand may be stored or packed for shipment. I
When the stand is secured inits upright position it is supplied with the transverse bars 11, which support the type-cases when in position for use by the compositor. These bars 11 are constructed with hooked shaped .ends 12, by which means they are hung upon the longitudinal upper rails 4.
They may thus be removed when the stand is to be folded flat, and may be adjusted to any suitable point upon therails 4, recessed seats being preferably provided to hold them in proper position. They are bent at 13 toform seats for. the upper case, and at 14. to form seats or rests for the lower case.
What I claim is- I l. A type-case stand, constructed substantially as described, soras to be capable of folding flat or into compact form.
2. In combination with a folding type-case stand, the braces 7, substantially as shown and described. I
3. In combination with a type-case stand, the freely detachable case supports or bars, substantially as shown and described.
4; A type-case stand constructed of posts in testimony whereof I have signed my of angle-iron, tied together by flat cross-bars name to this specification in the presence of 3 and 4, substantially as shown and described. two subscribing Witnesses.
5. The case supports 11, constructed of ALEXANDER l. DE PUY. metal bars bent to form attaching hooks 12 Witnesses:
and seats 13 14, substantially as shown and ELT. MUNSON, described. 0. W. FORBES.
