{M 5 WM- UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTcE.
ALBERT J. ANDREWS, OF LINDEN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLATFORM-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,712, dated May 27, 1879; application filed February 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. ANDREWS, of Linden, in the county of Genesce and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Platform-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to new and useful improvements in that class of ladders that are provided with a platform at top, such as are usually employed in fruit orchards, by means of which they may be readily used for any and all purposes to which ladders may be applied.
,The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved ladder with the platform extended. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the platform folded.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a ladder of the ordinary construction, except that the highest round or step, a, projects beyond the side rails, b. Pivotally secured to this round, at each end thereof, are the plates 0, to the outer ends of which are pivotally connected the braces d, the free ends of which are secured together by the rod 0, said braces being adapted to fold within the side rails, b, of the ladder. To the rear side of each of these rails is secured a hook, it, to receive and support the free ends of the braces and their connecting-rod. The platform 70 is supported and secured to the plates 0, as shown. Guiderods m are secured one to the rear face of each of the side rails, b, to prevent the braces, when released from their supporting-hooks, from swinging outward, and to guide the parts to place when the platform is folded upon the ladder, as shown in Fig. 2.
When it is desired to use the platform-ladder for any purpose, the platform is elevated and the free end of the braces and their connecting-rod is engaged with the hooks.
When the platform is not required, the braces are disengaged, and the guide-rods conduct and hold in place the parts folded, as shown in Fig. 2.
The manifold uses to which a ladder of this construction can be applied are so obvious that a description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The single ladder A, having hooks h and guides m, in combination with the platform k, pivoted to the upper round, a, of the ladder, the braces d, and bar 0, constructed and arranged substantially as describcd and shown.
