Description

(Brrr 4JESSE HIGHFIEDD, OF OENTBEVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-WAGONS.
Specification forming part ofl Letters Patent No. 140,703, dated July 8, 1873; application filed May 23, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE HIGHFIELD, of Centreville, in the countyof Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Dumping Wagons and Gars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a dumping wagon or car, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section of my dumping-wagon.
A A represents the bolsters of the ordinary running-gear for wagons, upon which is secured a box-frame or bottomless wagon-bed, B The bottom of this box or bed is formed of two wings, C (l, hinged by suitable eye hinges a a to a center roller, D, which passes through said hinges and runs longitudinally of the bed. The inner edges of the wings C O are rounded, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to turn on or around the central roller- D. The bottom thus constructed rests upon V-shaped supports E E secured on top of the bolsters A A, and over each support, at the outer edge of each wing (l, is a short roller, b, hung in suitable eye-hinges alo. For cars the box or bed, with its bottom, will be constructed in precisely the same manner, except that there must of necessity be an increased number of supports and a corresponding number of rollers on or in the outer edges of the wings. In each side of the box or bed B is a horizontal slot, d, with a downward vertical slot, e, at each end, as shown in Fig. l. That part of the box in which Jthese slots are made is strengthened bymeans of suitable metal plates, as shown, or in any other desired manner. G
represents a frame of any suitable dimensions, and is held by bolts f, through the lower ends of its side pieces, to the sides of the box B, said bolts passing through the slots above mentioned. By means of these slots the frame G can be moved to such a position that it may be turned down over the end of the box or bed while loading and going to the place of delivery, and can readily be raised again and moved to the proper position for unloading. When so raised it is held in vertical position by means of hooks or braces h h. Inlthe upper part of the frame G is a horizontal roller or windlass, H, which should be connected by a cord with the center roller D ofthe bottom, so that by turning said roller or windlass H, by means of a crank on its end, the center roller D will be raised and the wings C U move inward, and the load dumped downward through the bottom. In place of using this windlass a cord, i, may connect the roller D with the short end of a lever, I, which is pivoted on top of the frame G, and the long end of this lever, by another cord, i', connected with a windlass, J, arranged on the front end of the box or bed B. By this latter device considerably less power is required to dump or unload the wagon or car. The windlass J has its bearings in standards K K hinged to the front end of the box, and held by hooks or braces h when in use, and when not in use can be thrown down out ofthe way. On one side of the box or bed B is a hinged step, L, for convenience in using either ofthe appliances for unloading. If desired, the lever I may be used without the windlass J.
In each end of the box B, on the inside, at suitable points, are idle rollers m m, against which the ends of the wings C C will'bear when the center roller D is raised, whereby said wings are guided in their movement.
The cords used should have snap-hooks in their ends, so as to be readily attached and detached when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the folding-bottom C D, the V-shaped supports E E and rollers b b in the edges of the Wings C, as set forth.
2. The rollers m m arranged inside of the box B, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The movable frame Gr, in combination with the sides B having the slots d and e e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the bottoni C D, of the cords i fi', lever I, Windlass J, and
hinged standards K K, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE HIGHFIELD.
