Description

No. 785,310. PATENTED MAR.'21,1905. E. KOSTBNBADER.
DUMPING WAGON RACK; APPLICATION FILED NOV. 23,1904.
UNITED STATES Patented March 21, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
DUMPING' WAGON-RACK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,310, dated March 21, 1905. Application filed November 23, 1904. Serial No. 234,078.
Too/ll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS Kos'rENBADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grandin, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Dumping VVagon-Rack, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to facilitate unloading straw from a wagon-rack when carrying the straw from the separator of a threshing-machine to an engine to burn the straw for operating the engine, thresher, and separator by means of steam or for conveying and depositing straw from any one place to another and unloading the straw by simply tilting the rack by means of mechanism combined with the rack.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to produce a tilting side-delivery wagon-rack, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the rack and shows the mechanism connected therewith adapted to be normally operated for tilting it. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1 and shows the rear part of the wagon on which it' is mounted. Dotted lines indicate the position of the rack relative to its base and a wagon when it is tilted as required to dump a load of straw off at its side.'
The numeral 10 designates the parallel beams of a wooden frame. They are permanently connected at their ends by cross-pieces 12 and at their centers by a cross-bar 13, that extends to one side for supporting a post 14, fixed to its end. These parts may be fixed together by means of bolts or in any suitable way, as required, to produce a rigid support for the base of the tilting wagon-rack.
Three or more cross-pieces 15 are hinged to the outer edge of one of the beams 10, as shown in Fig. 2, and on their tops are fixed a plurality of cross-pieces 16, upon which is fixed the floor 17 of the wagon-rack.
To the ends of the outer cross-pieces 16 are fixedcorner-uprights 18, and to the uprights are fixed boards 19, as required to produce a rack that is open at one side.
A winch 20 is journaled to the lower end of the post 14 and one of the beams lOand provided with a crank-handle 21. A pulley 22 is suspended from a hook 23, fixed to the top of the post 14, and a rope 2 1 is fixed to the winch 20 and extended over the pulley 22 and from thence down and fixed to the end of the central cross-piece 15, that extends outward beyond the rack a small distance.
The wagon-rack thus constructed and combined with a portable base can be readily placed on the bolsters of a wagon as required for practical use. When the rack is in its normal position on a wagon and loaded with straw or similar matter, the load can be readily dumped at the side of the wagon by simply operating the winch as required to wind the rope thereon, and by so doing lift one side of the rack, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to tilt the rack and allow its contents to slide out and oif the rack.
Having thus setforth the purpose of my invention and the manner of its construction and operation, the practical utilitythereof will be readily uuderstood by grain threshersand others familiar with the art to which it pertains.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable base for a wagon-rack consisting of an oblong frame, a cross-piece fixed to the bottom and center of the frame and extended outward at one side, a post fixed to said extension, a winch journaled to the frame and the post, a pulley connected with the top of the post and a rope fixed to the winch and extended over the pulley, for the purposes stated.
2. A portable base for a wagon-rack con' sisting of an oblong frame, a cross-piece fixed to the bottom and center of the frame and extended outward at one side, a' post fixed to said extension, a winch journaled to the frame and the post, a pulley connected with the top of the post and a rope fixedto the winch and ley and connected With the lower end of the wagon-box, arranged and combined to oper- IO atein the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
