. Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial No. 167,007.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. Cox, citizen of the United States, residing at Berthold,
inthe county of TVarel and State or', North his invention relates to certain improvements in bundle carriers, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially adapted for use in connection with sheaves of grain; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character of a materially large capacity and Which is capable of readily and conveniently dumping or discharging a load when the requirements of practice may necessitate.`
It is also an obj eet of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character adapted to coact with a binder, and wherein the carrier is connected directly to the binder.
The invention consists in the details ci? construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved bundle carrier whereby certain im- 30 `portant advantages are .attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will 'be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention Will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to deand' . 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic view in top plan, with a part in section, or' my improved carrier and` a coacting portion of a binder, 'Le body of the carrier and the 0perating means therefor, including` the supporting shaft, being omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings; B is a diagrammatic representation of a' ortion of a binder to which is suitably a Xed a socket S, having coacting therewith a ball l, carried by the outer extremities of the converging arms 2. The opposite ends of the arms 2 are hingedly connected as at 3, with a side beam 5 or' the frame F. The frame F is supported by the wheels il, positioned intermediate the side beams and mounted upon the axle 6 carried by the frame I" and disposed transversely thereof. The operative connection between the binder B and the frame F is afforded by the arms I 2, which serve to maintain the frame l" in substa; "ally a constant position relative to the binder l, so that the sheaves or bundles as delivered from the binder may be readily deposited in my improved carrier by an operator standing upon the platform P supported by the arms 2. The forward end of the trame F `is provided with an extension E, with which is operatively engaged a draft rigging D, as it is my purpose to employ an extra draft animal coacting directly with my improved carrier. Y. .e
As disciosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that thc draft rigging D is positioned substantially in alinement with a draft rigging D of the binder proper, and which is indicated in fragment in Fig. 3.
The side beams 5 of the frame li are cach provided with substantially V shape side member 7, having its apex upwardly disposed and arranged substantially in vertical alinement with the axle 6. The apices ofi-he members 7 are provided with the upstanding bearings 8, with which the rock shaft 9 is operatively engaged. Mounted for rocking movement at substantially its longitudinal center is the body or basket l0, and said body or basket 10 is of materially large capacity. In practice I have found it best to have the p body or basket 10 ot such capacity as to receive about forty bundles or sheaves. It is The body or basket 10 is of such a length as to have the rear end portion thereof eX- tend beyond the rear end of the frame vF. Interposed between the rear portion of each of the beams 5 of the frame F and the rear portion of the corresponding side ofthe sket or body 10, is a toggle lever T, the sections 11 of which are of substantially the same length; Operatively engaged with the pivot 12 connecting with the sections 11 is a lever or elongated link 111, also operatively engaged with an upstanding rock arm 15, carried by an end portion of the shaft 9. The rock arms 15 are in parallelism, as are also the levers or links 14, whereby it will be perceived that lupon rearwardl movement of the rock arms 15 and the levers or links 14, the 'sections 11 of 4the toggle levers T will be folded, and result in the body or basket 10 assuming a dumping position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The rocking movement of the body or basket 10 under the influence of the links 14 is limited by the contact of the body or vbasket 10 with the rear members and the side members 7 of the frame F.
lUpon forward movement being imparted to the levers or links 14, the body or basket 10 will be swung upwardly to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, orv in a position to receive the sheaves or bundles as delivered'from the binder B.-
Carried by a side of the body or basket 10 is a segmental rack 16, concentric to the shaft 9. The adjacent rock arm 15 is continued upwardly to afford an operatiiw-handlel, and said handle 17 is provided with a conventional latch mechanism 18, coacting with the rack 1G, whereby it will bc perceived that the body or basket 1() may be effectively locked in a raised position. alsoind it ot' advantage to provide the outer end portion of the extension E with an eXtra wheel iV, or its equivalent, for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
The body or basket 10 is provided with a tail gate G, hingedl'v or pivotally connected at its lower marginal portion, as indicated atA 19, for swinging movement in a vertical direction. Each side of the body or basket 10 above the pivotal or hinged connection 19 is provided with ay guide pulley 20 or the like, with which coaets the flexible member 2l, having its outer end portion suitably secured to the gate (l, while the opposite end portion of .said Vflexible member 21 is operatively engaged with a rod operatively connected with the pivot member 12 of the*l adjacent toggle lever T. ily this arrangement it will bcperceived that when the rear or carriage 10 is low will be free to swing downwardly in order lto permit the discharge 0f the load carried by the body or basket 10. It will alsov be self-evident that as the 4rear portion of the body or basket 10 is elevated, the gate G will be caused vautomatically to assume a closed position and be maintained eli'ectively in such closed position.
In view of the foregoing it is thought to be self-evident. that my improved device is oit materially large capacity, whichallows the operator to clear the greater portionof his field immediately the crop is cut, thus permitting plowing to be started at once. While it is true that an eXtra man will be required in theerew and also an extra draft animal, a material saving'of time; in harvesting is ei'ected which materiallyV offsets the additional cost of operation. With the use of my improved carrier it is possible to leavethe field in such condition as to permit immediate plowing of substantially eighty per cent. of the field. My improved carrier also materially saves time in shocking and threshing.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a bundle carrier portionof the bodyered, the gate G constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason ofthe convenience-and facility 'with which itmay be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some. change and modiication without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not Wish to be, understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the lseveral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I also lind it of advantage to provide'v the forward portions of the side members 7 with the upstanding posts or brace members 23, upon which the forward end portion of the body or basket 10 rests when the same is at the limit of its upward movement. vThe posts or brace members 23 serve to nrelieve the togglelevers 'l fronnexcessive strain` which would otherwise be imposed thereon by the load.
I claimt A bundle carrier including a portable trame, a body pivotally supported by the- Lamo@ 5 in one direction, and a guide member carried En testimony wheeof hereunto aix my by the body bove the hinged connection signature in the presence of two Witnesses. between the gate and body and with which I the exible connection (zo-acts, said'gate as- JOSEPH S.
