UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTINE GENTNER, JR,
OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
MOUNTING FOR EAR-RINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,157, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed September 24, 1888. $erial No. 286,260. (No model.)
To all whom it hwy concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE GENTNER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mountings for Ear- Rings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the manner of suspending the setting of an ear-ring from its mounting or sustaining-loop, and its object is to give a more free oscillation or vibration to the setting or pendant, especially when the drop is a diamond or other stone, whereby its reflecting or fiashin g light is greatly increased.
My invention consists in a novel arrangement, which I will now proceed to definitely describe and claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved ear-ring. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the pendant or drop removed. Fig. 3 is a front view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detached View of the pendant or drop.
Referring to the drawings, a represents an ear mount or ring of ordinary construction, having on one side the outward-curved portion a, in which is cut the elongated slot a (see Fig. 3,) and 011 the other side is the usual ear-pin a Inside of the curved portion a and across the center of the slot a is secured a small ball I). This small ball I) is rigidly secured in position by solder or otherwise.
0 is the pendant or drop, which has upon it the suspending-ring c, which is split at 0 so as to be inserted into the mount.
When it is desired to attach the pendant or drop 0 to the mount a, it is only necessary to open the suspendingring 0 and pass it through the elongated slot a and around the ball I), over the top surface of which it Tests and hangs, and then close the ring back to its normal position, where, as will be seen, it will be caused to oscillate and vibrate by the slightest movement of the wearer.
It will be observed that my invention is equally applicable to other articles of jewelry where pendants or drops are used and it is desired to give a free oscillation or vibration to the same.
It will be seen that the curved slot gives a wider range of vibration than in those mountings now in use, such curved slot being the principal feature of my invention.
I claim 1. The combination, with an ear-mount provided with a curved slot across which is secured a spherical bearing-surface, of a setting having a loop adapted to rest upon the spherical bearing-surface.
2. The ear-mount a a having the curved slot a across which is secured the ball I), which forms a bearing-surface for the loop 0' of the setting 0.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VALENTINE GENTNER, JR.
