PATENT OFFICE.
CAR-Doos.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,755, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed October 4, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. IVARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cavendish, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have `in'vented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure .l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows aportion of the side of a car with the door. Fig. 2 is a side View showing portions of the door with its tracks. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the upper and lower portions of the door with its tracks or ways.
The invention relates to improvements in doors for freight-cars; and it consists in the construction and novel combination ot parts, as hereinafter set forth. The object is to so construct the door that it will run easily on its track or way, and also to so form the runnerway that the door will be protected therebyT from displacement.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the side of a car, and ll is the door opening therein.
C is the lower way or track for the door D, consisting of a strip of wood about twice the length of the door and bolted or otherwise secured to the car-side. E is a similar way at the top of the door, and F is a stop-casing at Serial No. 287,177. (No model.)
one end. Metal flanges G are secured to cach way and project over the edge of the door, as shown, and hold the said door from displacement. The lower way C may have a metal plate I-I on its upper face to prevent wearing away.
The door D, at the top and bottom, has the transverse recesses I, within which are placed the rollers J. The rollers J project slightly beyond the edge of the door, so that the edge will not bear upon the ways, and the journals K of the rollers havevbearings through the plates L, which are seated in recess M in the sides of the door, so that the outer surface ot the plates will be flush with the surface of the door.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a car-door,A the combination, with ythe door, of bearing-plates seated in recesses in the door, rollers arranged in transverse recesses in the top and bottom edges of the door, j ournaled in the bearing-plates, and projecting beyond the edges of the door, the guideways applied to the car-body, having outer flanges projecting toward each other and lapping the outer roller bearing-plates, and a plate secured to the upper bearing-surface of the lower guideway, substantially as set forth. l
In testimon y whereof I affix my signatn re in presence ot two witnesses.
CHARLES L. IVARD. IVitnesses:
ALBERTA M. SMITH, ELLEN J. SPAFFORD.
