Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JOSEPH W. HOPKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND JAMES CLAYTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-VALVES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,447, dated October 27, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. HOPKINS, of Brooklynin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new: and Improved Pump-Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig.'2 is a perspective View of one of the valves detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to produce a valve for a steam-pump or for any other cylinder-pump, which gives easy access to the working parts, and which is n ot liable to become leaky or stopped up by sediment or other impurities that may be contained in the water during the operation of pumping.
The nature of the. invention will be readily understood from the following description.
A represents a case or box, made of cast iron or other saitable material, and provided With a fiat bottom to .it upon a corresponding fiat surface on the side or top of the pump-cylinder. This box contains two valves, B B', the circular heads a a of which iit into corresponding cavities in the heads of the box A, and which are separated from each other by a partition, b, from which curved segmental abutments c c extend about one-quarter round each valve.
Each of the valves is provided with a wing, d d', and with a cavity, c e', just in front of the wing, and if one of the valves closes its wing shuts down upon a seat,f or f, on the side of the boX A.. lf the valves open, the
wings d d come in contact with the ends of the curved partition-abutments c c', and by these means the motion of each valve is limited between its seat and the end of one of the curved partition-abutments, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings, where one of the valves is shown wide open and the other closed.
The box A is provided with three ports, g hh. The port y is the induction-port, and it communioates with the Water-supply` pipe, and the ports h h communicate with the interior of the pump-cylinder. The port g branches off in two channels, y* g"' one to communicate with the valve B, and the other to communicate with the valve B.
When the piston moves in the direction of arrow l, the Water rises through the channel g g* and passes through the cavity in the valve B, and through the port h into that part of the cylinder just vacated by the piston, at the same time the water before the piston is driven out through the port It', cavity in valve B, and ascension-pipe Con the top of the case or box A.
The motion of the valves is effected entirely by the motion ofthe piston, and by removing' one of the heads of the box A easy access can be had to both valves.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the independent oscillating valves B B, constructed as set forth,
with the partition b, case A, and the several.
Water-Ways, all in the manner herein shown and described.
JOSEPH W. HOPKINS. Witnesses:
M. S. PARTRIDGE, DANIEL RoBERTsoN.
