UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY DAVEY, OF XVESTMINSTER, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 404,176, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed October 2,1888. Serial No. 287,001. (No model.) Patented in England January 25, 1888, No. 1,168.
To all whom it may concern/ Be it known that l, HENRY DAVEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 3 Princes Street, Westminster, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Low-Pressure Steam -Boilers and Connections theref, (patented in England January 25, 1888, No. 1,1685) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in low-pressure boilers, such as were patented to me in England under Letters Patent numbered 3,833 and 15,185 for 1884, 1,981 for 1885, and 2,930 and 5,607 for 1886.
My present improvements are intended to serve the purpose of producing a boiler of very simple construction and operation and at a low cost, avoiding the danger of explosion and obviating the use of the safety-valve and water-gage, thus enabling persons notskilled in attending steam-boilers to perform such duties with safety;
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a vertical section of my improved lowpreseure boiler having a steam-engine and condenser attached to it.
The lettcrA in the drawing .represents a boiler; B, {ire-box; C, condenser, and D steamengine. The boilerA and ire-box B are secured to a bed-plate, A', which, by means of projections a, supports the grate a. The bed-plate A rests onalower continuous basefiange, a2, which forms the ash-chamber, and is provided with a sliding door, a3, by means of which the draft is regulated in the ordinary way. The boiler and fire-box are provided with a ,fuel-chute, a4, and door a for the purpose of introducing the fuel. This chute a4 is riveted to the lire-box and packed to the boiler by means of a packing-ring, a5, and packing a, as shown in the figure. The .lire-box B is provided with' additional heating-surface by means of tubes, as b b b2 b3, which are placed at an angle, so that the in the figure.
water heated in them may, in rising, produce a general circulation of the water in the boiler. A chimney, b4, leads the smoke from the fire-box 'through the boiler into the atmosphere.
At the top portion of the boiler an opening, a10,is provided, through which the steam is conducted into an annular chamber, d2, around the steam-cylinder d of the steamengine D, which latter is of ordinary construction, except that the guide d4 is cylindiical and cast in one piece with t-he'cylinder, so that it can be bored out in line with the cylinder, and thus save the labor of fitting, and also be fastened directly to the steam-boiler. No steam-chest is required in this construction, the annular chamber d2 serving the purpose. The bearing d5 for the main shaft forms a contiguous part of the boiler, and thus separate foundations for the same and extra fitting are rendered unnecessary.
The condenser C is attached to the boiler, and it may be a surface condenser, as shown The said condenser is in communication with the boiler, and thus the proper level of water in the boiler is maintained. The exhaust-steam from the cylinder d of the steam-engine D is conveyed through a pipe, d', to a head or hood, c, in the upper portion of the condenser, and from there through pipes c to another head or hood, c2, at the foot of the condenser, whence it is removed by an ordinary air-pump. The condenser-pipes c are surrounded by the water in the condenser, which is, by means of pipes c3, connected to a water-tank in order to keep/the condenser cool. As the steam-pressure, under myconstruction, hardly exceeds the pressure of an atmosphere, the condenser need not be closed to the atmosphere, as shown.
An ordinary blow-off, d6, may be attached to the boiler and chimney to discharge superfluous steam.
l. The combination of the steam-boiler A, fire-box B, having inclined circulation-dues within it, plate A', and chimney b4, :L11 C011- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my structed and arranged substantially as dosgnature in presence of two witnesses. scribed' HENRY DAVEY.
2. The combination of the stemnboilelr A, 5 [iro-box B, fuel-chute a,packing-1ng ai, and \Vitnesses:
