PAUL VLDER, OF BUDA-PESTH, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
LEATHER-THONG CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,805, dated May 21, 1889.
Application iiled September 13, 1888. Serial No. 285,350. (No model.)
.T0 all wiz/0777, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, PAUL VLDER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-I-Iungary, residing at Buda-Pesth, in the Kingdom of l-Iungary, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thong-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to produce mechanism whereby thongs suitable for lacing machinery-belts, and like purposes, may be easily and quickly cut from leather and similar materials.
The nature of the invention consists in the details of combination and construction, subst-antially as illustrated in the drawings, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a plan view of my newly-invented thong-cutter. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. Sis alongitudinal sectional View of the same, taken through the middle. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the same, taken transversely through the knife-slot, hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, a designates a wooden board of convenient length, breadth, and thickness. Partly through this board is cnt a mortise, b', to accommodate the gage l). This gage is retained in position by the nut and bolt c c. Under the inner end of this gage, in a proper recess, is placed the circular metallic `plate k, so that its upper surface will be tlush with the upper surface o f the board a. This plate may be held with two screws, or in any other convenient and suiiicient way. Another metal plate, designated by e, and secured by the thumb-nut and screw f, extends diagonally beyond the inner end of the gage b and over part of and beyond the plate k. There is, however, a little space between this plate e and the plate 7e..
If it be found desirable, the plate e may be notched to accommodate the end of the gage l), as illustrated in Fig. l. In the plate e is cut a further not-ch, i', and directly under this a slot, fi', is cut in the plate 71;. The point of 1 the knife gg iits into this notch and slot, so
that it can be held either perpendicular or i slightly diagonal, the whole device to be substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The end of the gage b having been set at a distance from where the edge g of the knife should come equal to the breadth of the thong to be cut and secured by the nut c, and the plate e being, as aforesaid, secured so that the notch e' will come directly over the slot i', the operator puts in the knife g g into the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and holds it therewith one hand. lith the other hand he forces the leathern disk d between the plates e and k against the edge of the knife with a rotary motion until a long enough thong has been cut to be grasped firmly with the hand. Then, taking this thong in one hand, he pulls it, while he holds the knife in position with the other hand. As he pulls the thong, the disk d revolves and the knife cuts the thong uniformly of the width of the distance from the end of the gage b to the edge of the knife. As the thong is cut off of the disk d, the disk grows smaller and smaller until the whole disk has been converted into a continuous thong.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to stcure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the support or cutting-board a, having mortise b', and recess to accommodate the plate k, of the gage b, adapted to said mortise b', the nut and screw c c', holding said gage in position in said mortisc, the plate le, fastened partly under the inner end of said gage and formed with slot i', the plate e, formed with the notch 1', and extending over the plate k to hold a leathern disk in position while being cut, the thumb nut and screw f, securing said plate e in position, and the knife, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL WLDER.
