STEM FOR CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDERS OR PIPES.

Be it known that I, IRVING PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stems for Cigar and Cigarette Holders or Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in stems for cigar and cigarette holders orpipes, and among the objects in View are to provide a holder or pipe constructed so as to prevent the passage therethrough of nicotine, that is simple in construction, readily cleaned, and can be easily and quickly taken apart and put together.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, an d the novel features be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a cigar-holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details of the different parts composing the holder separately arranged, and Fig. 5 is a partly central longitudinal section of the holder as adapted for use as a pipe.

Like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 represents the stem of the holder, which is longitudinally bored its entire length, as at 2. Below the bore 2, and for about onehalf its length, the stem is cut away to form a shoulder, 3, which is preferably formed with a cavity, el. Forward of the shoulder 3 the stem is provided with opposite dovetailed longitudinal grooves 5, which extend forward to the end of the stem.

Adapted to ride upon the grooves 5 and abut against the shoulder 3, and thus form the completed stem, is a removable tubular sleeve, (i, centrally bored and longitudinally slotted, as at 7, throughout its length at one side, the edges of the slot being beveled so as to take under the grooves 5 of the stem. Thus, when the sleeve is in position, a chamber, 8, is formed, which, by means of a transverse opening, 9, registers with the bore 2. rlhis chamber may be filled with any suitable nicotine-absorbing material-such as cotton, 10-so that smoke passing therethrough will be practically freed from nicotine.

rlhe front end of the sleeve 6 and the stem 1 are preferably screw-threaded, as at 11, and inserted therein is the screw-threaded stem 12 of the holder 13, the stem 12 being formed eccentric with relation to the center of the holder, so that when inserted into a holder having stein 1 a continuousunbroken outside surface is formed.

As thus constructed the holder is adapted for the smoking of cigars or cigarettes, the outer end of the holder being designed for their reception. The smoke irst passes from the holder 13 into the chamber Sand through the absorbing material 10, if provided, thence through the opening 9 to the bore 2. This pocket or chamber 8 also serves a further purpose than that stated, in that it receives the spittle which usually passes down into the end of the cigar or pipe. By removing the holder 13 the chamber may be cleaned, and the bore 2 and opening 9 blown out or a straw passed therethrough, and thus a sweet clean smoke always obtained.

To adapt the invention for a pipe, the stem 13 is removed and a plug inserted, which is provided with plain or screw-threaded stems 15, one at each end, the one for insertion in the stem, as described, and the latter into the neck of a 'pipe-bowl, 16, as shown in Fig. 4. It is also evident that the stem and sleeve may be formed in a single piece, as Shown in said figure; but the other construction is preferred, as it gives access to all of the parts.
